"We're here." her mother Sandra said serious and tired, turning off from the highway. She came out of her memories and sighed, seeing the sign "High Desert State Prison." She looked around when coming out of the car. It seemed more scary place that it had been on the internet.
"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" she asked worried.
"Yes. I need to do this alone." she said nervous as they walked inside. She filled in some forms and hugged her mom. She was escorted through security rooms, asked to remove all loose objects and was checked by a guard feeling out her sides and checking her shoes. She sighed when she was finally allowed to go to the visitors room. She sat in place, nervous. It was long time ago since they last saw. After their night together he had some busy times and then he was arrested violating his probation terms after getting into trouble with the gang fight. This all came to her as a shock. She heard some doors opening and closing. She took a deep shivering breath before Ronnie stepped in her sight. She gasped as she saw him. He seemed tired and depressed, his hair was longer than it was the last time they saw each other, dirtier. He had dark circles around his eyes and he was jittery.
He looked at her, surprised and felt glad, biting down his cheek. He sighed and sat down, taking the phone. She quickly took it too "Hi." she said with a shivering voice. She knew seeing him behind bars would be hard but the reality was even tougher. She felt her emotions washing over her head and shed a tear.
"Hey." he said and looked at her, still surprised but then said bitter "You found me."
"Ronnie." she said and shed another tear, on the verge of bursting to cry.
"I'm surprised to see you here." he said hesitating "Why did you come?"
She was silent, trying to get over her tears before she could continue.
"Sam.. Sam." Ronnie said sad, looking at her, feeling bad about everything and put his hand against the glass. She nodded and wiped away her tears, then put her hand on his.
"How are you holding on?" she asked holding back tears. He let out a chuckle and sighed "I'm fine." but when he realized he wasn't convincing enough, he said "I'm a survivor, Sam." She looked at him deep into his eyes. Something in him was changed, he wasn't that young boy anymore that was fooling around. Something in him was broken. He had been suffering, if he wasn't doing it that very moment, too. The way he said it, the way he looked while saying it. His dark eyes, so tired and depressed. At that moment she was afraid to tell him the reason she was there. So she sat in there, having an inner battle. She didn't want to tell the truth, face his reaction now she had seen him in such vulnerable condition. He saw her struggles.
"How are you doing?" he asked and added with a slight smile "I appreciate you coming to visit me. To be honest, I wasn't expecting you.." He took another deep breath. She nodded and took a deep breath before she burst out "Ronnie, I'm pregnant." He looked at her, in shock "What.."
"I said I was.." she started to repeat.
"I'm not fucking deaf! I heard you" he burst out and looked at her with questioning eyes "No..."
"Yes..." she said through tears.
"So, you're coming here to say you're fucking pregnant?" he asked irritated, in thoughts "What am I supposed to do with that knowledge, huh?"
"It's yours, Ronnie..." she said sad "I'm almost 4 months pregnant." and took out a sonogram picture.
"Bullshit!" he slapped his hands against the table, making the guard alarmed "That's it Radke!" and came to him, yanking him up. "You're fucking lying!" he shouted out, restrained by the guards. She cried, holding her hands on her mouth.
"You're fucking lying!!!!" was the last thing he yelled to her when he was dragged away. She left to go to the toilets and cried there for a while. When she walked out of the security check, she was like a zombie. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. When her mother saw her, she ran to her and grabbed her into embrace "It's okay. Everything is going to be okay." She didn't know exactly what had happened but she already had a clue. They walked to the car and she hold the door open for Sam. They drove away, Sam looking out of the window, crying herself to sleep.
