MONTELL

I wake up relaxed and happy with Mona on my mind. I dreamed of our future and the weird thing is that it wasn't even scary. What the hell is happening to me? I pick up my phone from the nightstand and send Mona a message.

Morning babe.
Did you sleep well?

Have a good day with the girls.

Are you free for dinner?

She sends me a picture as a reply. And I laugh at the sight of the two best friends in one bed. Ama's bed I assume, because it doesn't look like Mona's. Their hair is all over the place and it looks like they are not wearing much.

I receive a text message in return;

Hey Montell, Ama here.

Tell your girl to stop hoarding the blankets and sheets.

Jeez. My ass is cold.

Seriously though, stock up on blankets at your place.

I receive another picture this time of Mona on top of Ama, trying to grab the phone back.

I laugh and get up. I walk into the kitchen and make myself a coffee. I sip it while leaning against the counter. My phone vibrates and I look at the message.

Sorry about that.

I slept great, snuggled up to my bestie.

I'd love to have dinner with you!
I'll call you as soon as Ama has left
to meet Noah in the gym.

I dial my aunt's number and smile when she picks up all excited to hear from me. I ask her if she has time to meet me for lunch and she squeals. I promise to pick her up and take her to her favorite southern-style restaurant.

I really need to talk to her. I need advice on love and she is the best person for it. I don't want to mess things up with Mona and I'm scared I will.

I put on some shorts and a tank top and wrap the band around my upper arm to slide my phone in. Earbuds in and music playing, I run down the stairs and out in the street, towards the park.

I need my run in the morning, it makes me feel alive. I focus on the movement and enjoy the feeling of freedom I get from it.

My music pauses as my phone rings and I stop running to pick it up. It's Mona. I guess Ama has left the apartment.

"Hey babe. Did Ama leave?"

"Yeah, she's gone. Why are you breathing heavily? What are you doing mister?"

I chuckle, "I was running babe. For fun."

"Ahh. So what are you wearing? And are you breaking a sweat yet?"

"Oh girl, I'm practically naked and my skin is glistening with sweat."

I hear her gasp and I chuckle.

We talk about Ama and how she got mister Alderidge's permission to take Benedictus to his baseball game.

When there's a lull in the conversation I gather all my guts and say: "I'm sorry. For blurting out my thoughts yesterday. I wanted to be honest with you, but I must have sounded like I wasn't interested in a future with you."

She stays silent for a bit and says: "Ama pointed out to me that I should appreciate your honesty and I do. Please be honest with me, always. Even if you're afraid of disappointing me. Because lying to me is so much worse. And I don't want to force you into anything you're not ready for. I'm not even sure I am ready for it. But I really like you Montell."

I smile like an idiot, standing in the park, as people run by me. I don't care. I could be naked in the middle of the street and wouldn't care.

I clear my throat and say: "I really like you too, Mona. And that scares me a little because I've never felt this way about anyone before. And I was convinced a guy like me, with a job like mine, would be better off single. I'm not so sure about that anymore babe."

I can basically hear her smile at the other end and wait for her to speak, enjoying the comfortable silence between us. Her voice sounds warm and soft when she breaks the silence.

"Thank you for saying that. I have to get ready to meet the girls at the salon. I'll see you for dinner tonight. Bye boo."

"Bye babe. See you for dinner at my place. I'll cook. Say hi to the girls for me."

I hang up and start running again. Man, it feels like I'm floating on air. Is this what love feels like? Do I seriously have a shot at happiness here? Could she really see a future with someone like me?

I pick up the pace and focus on the running and try to clear my mind.

I run back to my place and hit the shower as soon as I'm inside. Once washed and dried, I stand in front of my closet and pull out some slacks and a white polo. Auntie likes it when I'm casual chique.

Her words mind you. I would never call it that.

I grab my keys, phone, and sunglasses and walk out the door. I move over to the flower shop around the corner and let them create a bouquet with yellow flowers in it. My auntie's favorite color. I think for a second and message Ama. She replies quickly.

Pink tulips. ;)

I smile and have them combine three different types of pink tulips into one bouquet and I tell them I will pick them up later that day. I pay for both, take the yellow bouquet with me, and make my way over to the apartment where my mom and auntie live.

I knock on the door and as soon as it's opened I am pulled down for a hug and a kiss.

Auntie is beaming and cries when I pull the flowers from behind my back. "Oh my sweet boy! Those are beautiful! Thank you so much! I'll put them in water first and then we'll go for lunch."

I watch her run off into the kitchen and breathe in the atmosphere in the room. It always feels like home in here. Like the rooms embrace you with the love of both my moms.

She walks back over to me, all smiles and I offer her my arm. She links her arm with mine and we walk out the door.

She looks me over in the elevator and seems to be thinking about something. When the elevator doors open, she turns to face me and asks: "What's her name?"
