The gods each must choose a human as their champion, that human is granted incredible powers. They then have two years to recruit 6 underlings and train, giving the underlings part of their power. At the end of the two years a tournament will be held between all the champions.
We later find out the gods do this as a game and out of bored once every few hundred years or so, maybe the winner gets any wish they want.
