Each planet picks a mech fighter to represent them in a tournament, held by a bored god. This god even promises to evolve the species that wins to be above all the others. He even sets up a special rule, and device inside of each mech. It lets them absorb the loser's mech and uses it to create another form, that they can switch to at any time.
