The only way to get magic in this world is to form a contract with a deity, god, angel, demon, or mythical creature. Once you get magic though, you must serve under who gave the magic to you, but you may live life freely. You can have a normal life, but once your master or mistress calls you, you must come. The price for breaking the contract is death, your soul will go to neither heaven nor hell, but will just vanish into the void.
