Title: The Eye

Chapters read: 6/13

Score: 8/10

INTRODUCTION:

The Eye delves deep into an exciting world of magic. The story tells the story of Minerva Good, a special witch whose bloodline dates back to the Salem witches. The book details a very good portrayal of magic and mythology, all while mixing all of these with college and self-discovery.

What I LIKED about your book:

The first thing that I would like to note is how well-developed and described your world is, I gotta applaud those world-building skills. Early on in the chapters, you revealed that it has a 'magic community' comprising of typical fantasy characters like witches and werewolves what I didn't expect, though, is that you'd be mixing it up with a little bit of mythology by incorporating gods and their offspring in this so-called 'magic community'. It's also revealed that the humans is not well-aware of the presence of magical beings, though there are some 'enlightened' humans. Due to the presence of academic institutions specializing in magic, such as the Arcane University, I think it's safe to assume that the numbers of magical beings are huge. Overall, I love how you gradually revealed this world instead of dumping all the information in one go. The way that it is propelled from the characters' thoughts and with it's details hinted at most of the times gave it a sense of authenticity.

I gotta applaud your premise too! Although I haven't read further, I was really impressed by your premise, mainly because it clearly introduced your characters into the story, all while building up the plot and backbone of the book's structure. It resourcefully used the space to not only give us an insight on what to expect from your characters, but also to digest a lot of things regarding the nature of their world. The premise also served to pique my interest for the countless builds of intrigue scattered throughout it that just makes me want to read further into the story.

The characters are well-developed, each with their own personal background creatively created specifically for them. Minnie's character is greatly explored in the span of those chapters, along with her family and heritage, even her friends! Minnie's character, for some reason, is really interesting. She's a mix of simple and intriguing. She's easy to understand and to view but deeper into the story, you've revealed really intriguing details that allude to Minnie's importance. Eva and Ray are also really lovely characters, I do hope if I read further, I get to see more of their personal growth!

The writing style is very descriptive and introspective, detailing many scenes with an apparent smoothness and with a great regard to Minnie's thoughts. It's also very lighthearted, which serves to further accentuate the book's bubbly and cheerful mood. The introspective treatment really helped with the narration and the flow of the story, as Minnie's thoughts is where most of the world-building and plot details are. It also serves as an instrument in character building, as it not only gives more depth to Minnie's character but to all of those around her.

What I DIDN'T LIKE about your book:

The set-up is a bit cliche right from the start. It's the typical urban fantasy story, though I think it will further branch out the farther I read into the book.

The premise served as great introduction to Minnie, but frankly, I think the excessive overlook to her daily life overshadowed a few vital elements. I think I can use more screen time for her mom and dad, more insights to their personalities as it wasn't as explored as much as Minnie's friends are. I know her Mom's the strict type of parent. Her Dad though, I have no clue. It's still a very entertaining read to be honest, I'm just really interested to further dissect her parents' personalities.

Conclusion:

I know it's disappointing that I've only read 6 chapters but hey, I think you've got most of the vital elements covered in those six. Not to mention, your build-up of intrigue really is gnawing at me to read further into the story.

This would be definitely be in my read later list. I just gotta see how crazy this book will be after all the twists are revealed!
