I didn't even try to convince Maihua I'm okay, she'd see right through me. So I told her what was bugging me, how I won't be able to invite my friends over and how I won't even be able to celebrate the only 18th birthday I'll have. Her first instinct was to hug me which felt amazing, I felt so safe and calm in her arms. It was so nice I was sad when she moved away.

"But Emily said she'll try and convince mom to let me have it anyway" I said after. She smiled to that.

"Well we all know how good she'll be at convincing her" she replied. I laughed in response.

"I guess so"

A few hours later we were practically cuddling on the bed, watching Steven Universe on my laptop. It actually took a little while to convince Maihua to watch it with me but now that we were here she seemed to enjoy it. Actually I learned that her favorite character was Peridot which is adorable because mine's Lapiz. I ship them, if you don't well then you're wrong.

We stopped watching right after Peri was introduced to eat dinner. Per usual the whole family ate together.

"So Maihua. Tell us about yourself!" my mom, of course, said while plating our food.

"Um okay. I'm 18, I live with my older sister as my parents aren't exactly accepting of me, I dropped out of high school to try acting, I'm actually going to be a part of a short film that's coming out soon-ish" she started, thinking of what more she could say.

"Your parents are accepting of you?" my mom asked, almost devastated. Maihua shruged.

"I've learned to accept it. They just won't budge" she chuckled.

"That's sad. If you ever need anyone to be a parental figure I'm here" my moms smiled. Maihua smiled in response.

"Thank you"

Dinner went by well. We laughed pretty much all the time, talking about the most random stuff you can think of. At some point my mom even brought out our baby pictures which, as you can imagine, was embarrassing but it was nice to see them.

Towards the end me, Em and Maihua started singing random tik tok sounds that were stuck in my head for the rest of the day. As it was still light outside after we were done with dinner we got some drinks and hung out outside. For the first time in a while I really felt happy where I was and it was so refreshing I wished it could last all night.
