Everyone had been getting by, even without a Hokage. I knew it wouldn't be long before the next one was chosen. None of the Five Great Nations could survive long without a leader.
One day, Kakashi Sensei asked to have lunch with me and Sasuke. We got some training done before we headed over to the teahouse. When we got there, Kakashi Sensei was already outside — early for once — alongside Kurenai Sensei and Asuma Sensei.
The moment we arrived, all three of them stiffened.
Without warning, Kurenai and Asuma vanished.
I frowned. "What's going on?"
Kakashi Sensei looked unusually serious. "Sorry guys, but I'm going to have to take a raincheck."
Sasuke narrowed his eyes immediately.
We were about to leave when Kakashi called out, "Not you, (Y/N). I need you for something."
Sasuke looked at me silently. I gave him a reassuring nod. "It's okay."
Reluctantly, he disappeared.
The second he was gone, Kakashi turned toward me. "There are two strangers in the village. I need your help locating them."
My breath caught.
For a second, I couldn't move.
Then I forced myself to nod.
Kakashi led me through the village rooftops until we arrived near the river. I landed beside him and froze.
Kurenai and Asuma were already fighting two men dressed in long black cloaks decorated with red clouds.
One stood on the footpath.
The other stood calmly atop the water itself.
The moment my eyes landed on him, the world seemed to stop.
My breath caught somewhere between my lungs and throat.
Six years.
Six years of grief, hatred, unanswered questions, and sleepless nights.
And there he was.
Itachi Uchiha.
The same dark hair.
The same unreadable eyes.
The same calm expression that used to soften whenever he looked at Sasuke... or at me.
My fingers loosened around my kunai before I could stop them.
For the briefest moment, something in his composure cracked too.
His eyes widened almost imperceptibly.
"...(Y/N)."
My heart twisted painfully at the sound of my name in his voice.
Then Kakashi's sharp voice cut through the moment.
"(Y/N), don't lose focus!"
I blinked hard and tightened my grip on my weapon before it could slip from my fingers completely.
Hatred surged through me so violently it almost drowned everything else.
Not hatred for myself.
Hatred for what he did to Sasuke.
I leapt forward, appearing beside the river with my kunai raised.
The shark-like man beside Itachi grinned. "Well, well. So this is the fiancée."
I ignored him.
Kakashi landed beside me.
"Why would you bring her into this, Kakashi?" Itachi asked quietly.
