When I opened my eyes, there was nothing.

No battlefield.

No screaming.

No explosions.

No pain.

Only darkness.

I slowly pushed myself upright and immediately froze.

Water rippled beneath my feet.

Not deep water.

Not shallow water.

Just an endless black surface stretching in every direction.

My hand shot toward my abdomen.

Nothing.

No blood.

No wound.

No torn flesh.

I stared down at myself.

"What..."

Then it came back.

The war.

The Ten-Tails.

Seiichi.

His sword.

My blood.

His body hitting the ground beside mine.

My breath caught.

"Oh."

I looked around again.

"So I'm dead."

"Not yet."

I spun.

A man floated several metres away.

Tall.

Pale.

Ancient.

His white robes were marked with black magatama, horn-like protrusions rising from his forehead. A strange Rinnegan-like marking sat above his eyes.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

Then recognition hit me.

My mouth fell open.

"No way."

The man's eyebrow rose.

"You're..."

I pointed at him.

"The Sage of Six Paths."

I immediately started to bow.

He lifted one hand.

"There is no need."

I slowly straightened.

"Right."

I looked around.

Then back at him.

"So if I'm not dead, where exactly am I?"

"Between."

"That's comforting."

A faint amusement entered his expression.

I crossed my arms.

"Why am I here?"

"Because I wished to speak with you."

"Of course you did."

I rubbed my forehead.

"Because today apparently wasn't strange enough."
