Lost Bonds

Madara's gaze shifted towards me.

"You know, Sasuke," he said casually, as though discussing the weather. "If you no longer have any use for that woman, perhaps you should finish her off. She knows far too much."

My hand immediately tightened around my sword.

The bastard.

Before I could come up with a suitably violent response, Madara disappeared, leaving only Sasuke, Karin and me on the ruined bridge.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Sasuke started walking.

Towards Karin.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

My stomach dropped.

No.

No, he wouldn't.

Surely not.

Karin looked up at him from where she lay injured on the ground.

"S-Sasuke...?"

Blue lightning crackled around his hand.

Chidori.

My heart stopped.

He was actually going to do it.

Without thinking, I moved.

One moment I was standing beside Karin.

The next, I was standing directly between them.

Sasuke's Chidori stopped inches from my chest.

Close enough that I could feel the chakra buzzing against my skin.

Neither of us looked away.

"If you want to kill her," I said quietly, "you're going to have to go through me."

For a brief moment, something flickered in his eyes.

Hesitation.

Pain.

Something.

Then it vanished.

"So be it."

The Chidori surged.

I closed my eyes.

Then—

"No!"

My eyes flew open.

Sakura.

Standing at the far end of the bridge.

For the first time since Danzo's fight began, genuine surprise crossed Sasuke's face.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, horrified.

Sakura ignored me completely.

She walked straight towards Sasuke.

Every step made my anxiety worse.

"Look, Sasuke," she said. "I've made my decision."

No.

Immediately, I knew where this was going.

And immediately, I knew it wasn't true.

Sakura would never abandon the village.

Never.

"I'm tired of regretting not leaving with you."

Another step.

"I don't care about the village anymore."

Another.

"I want to be with you."
