On the way back to the hideout, a familiar chakra brushed against my senses.

I stopped immediately.

Itachi and Kisame halted beside me.

"What is it?" Kisame asked.

I stared into the trees for a moment before letting out a sigh.

"You two go ahead. I'll catch up."

Kisame raised an eyebrow but shrugged. Itachi studied me for a second longer before nodding. Neither questioned me.

The moment they disappeared, I turned toward the forest.

"You can come out now."

A figure stepped from the shadows.

Then another.

And another.

My gaze settled on the man standing at the front.

Sasuke.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

It had become a strange pattern between us. Meeting. Arguing. Parting.

Neither willing to let go.

Neither willing to follow the other.

Behind him stood three unfamiliar shinobi.

A white-haired swordsman.

A red-haired woman glaring at me as if I'd personally ruined her life.

And a tall orange-haired man watching silently.

Sasuke got straight to the point.

"Join us."

I blinked.

"...What?"

"My team."

For a second I genuinely thought I'd misheard him.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was ridiculous.

"You want me to join your team?"

"Yes."

I stared at him.

Then at the three people behind him.

Then back at him.

"Sasuke."

My voice was softer now.

"You want me to abandon my husband..."

I pointed at myself.

"...for the man who just killed my father."

His expression didn't change.

"And you want me to help you hunt the person I love most in the world."

Still nothing.

I shook my head.

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

"You didn't even think about it."

"I don't need to."

I turned to leave.

"You said you'd do anything for me."

That stopped me.

Slowly, I looked back over my shoulder.

The words hurt because they were true.

Once upon a time, I probably would have.

But that wasn't the choice in front of me anymore.
