Orochimaru's Hideout

I waited until Itachi and Kisame left on their mission before making my move.

The moment the door closed behind them, I was already gathering my things.

Time was running out.

Every day Itachi's condition worsened. Every day the medicine I created seemed to do a little less. I had spent months searching for answers, filling notebooks with observations and failed theories. I had consulted every source I could find. I had tested every remedy I dared.

Nothing worked.

I hated what I was about to do.

I hated where I was going.

But I had reached the point where my pride no longer mattered.

Because this wasn't about me.

It was about him.

The journey took several days. The entire time I kept asking myself the same question:

What if he can't help either?

When I finally arrived outside the hideout, I stopped.

The entrance looked exactly as I remembered.

Cold.

Dark.

Unwelcoming.

I closed my eyes and drew a slow breath.

Lady Tsunade couldn't help me.

I couldn't help him.

This was my last option.

Opening my eyes, I stepped inside.

The corridors twisted endlessly through the rock. I had only made it halfway down one of them before something cold pressed against my throat.

A kunai.

I sighed.

"You're going to make this difficult, aren't you?"

The Sound ninja ignored me.

Within minutes my hands were tied and I was being escorted deeper into the hideout.

Eventually a door opened.

I was shoved inside.

"Lord Orochimaru, we caught this woman sneaking through the hideout."

The moment I looked up, I froze.

My father sat across the room.

Kabuto stood beside him.

And leaning casually against the wall was Sasuke.

For a moment none of us spoke.

Sasuke's eyes widened.

Mine probably did too.

"...Hi, Dad."

For a moment, no one spoke.

Sasuke stared at me as though I had appeared out of thin air.

I probably looked just as shocked.

Of all the people I expected to see here, he was somehow both the most obvious and the least prepared-for.

The two Sound ninja stepped back.

"Lord Orochimaru, this woman was caught sneaking around."

My father's golden eyes never left me.

"I can see that."

The guards left, shutting the door behind them.

The ropes around my wrists loosened and fell to the floor.
