It had been three years since I joined the Akatsuki on my secret mission.
Three years of lies.
Three years of sending information back to the Hidden Leaf.
Three years of pretending to be one of them.
During that time, my collection of journals had grown into entire binders. One for the Akatsuki. One for my father. One for Sasuke. Every rumour, every sighting, every mission, every conversation I could safely record.
If I died tomorrow, there would still be enough information to help the village.
Itachi had continued training me during those years. He refined my swordsmanship, helped me strengthen my jutsu, and pushed me further than anyone else ever had.
Kakashi Sensei had eventually taught me the Chidori.
I had even managed to learn a modified version of the Fourth Hokage's Teleportation Jutsu.
I was stronger than I had ever been.
Yet somehow, I still wasn't strong enough.
One day, I was following another lead on Sasuke and Orochimaru through the Land of Wind.
Another dead end.
Another wasted week.
I was about to leave when Pain's image appeared before me.
"Deidara and Sasori should already be in the Hidden Sand Village."
I immediately felt my stomach drop.
"The One-Tail Jinchūriki?" I asked.
Pain nodded.
"Go ensure the mission succeeds. Do not allow them to delay the extraction."
Then he vanished.
I stood frozen.
Only one person fit that description.
Gaara.
Without hesitation, I activated my teleportation formula.
The world blurred.
Moments later I appeared inside the Hokage's office.
Tsunade looked up from her paperwork.
One look at my face was enough.
"What happened?"
"The Akatsuki are attacking the Hidden Sand."
I struggled to keep my voice steady.
"They're after Gaara."
The room fell silent.
Tsunade immediately stood.
"I'll dispatch a team."
"What if they're too late?" I demanded.
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Images flashed through my mind.
Gaara sitting beside me during training.
Gaara listening to my story.
Gaara quietly accepting my friendship when everyone else feared him.
Tsunade stepped around her desk.
"(Y/N)."
I looked up.
"They won't stop searching for him."
She placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Have faith."
I closed my eyes.
