At first, our missions were painfully simple.
Finding lost cats.
Pulling weeds.
Helping old ladies carry groceries.
Things like that.
Even I was starting to get bored.
We were standing in the Hokage's office receiving yet another dull assignment when Naruto Uzumaki finally snapped.
"I want a real mission!" he shouted dramatically. "Something dangerous and exciting! Not this boring little kid stuff!"
I winced slightly as his voice echoed through the room.
The Hokage sighed around his pipe while Kakashi-sensei lazily flipped a page in his book as though this happened every day.
Honestly, it probably did.
After several minutes of arguing, the Hokage finally relented.
"You will escort a client safely back to the Land of Waves," he explained. "Your mission is to protect him until the bridge he's constructing is completed."
Naruto practically lit up with excitement.
Then the client walked in.
The strong smell of alcohol hit me almost immediately.
The old man looked completely unimpressed as he squinted at us through the haze of his drunkenness.
"These are my bodyguards?" he scoffed. "They're just a bunch of brats."
Something told me I wasn't going to like him very much.
The man introduced himself as Tazuna, a bridge builder from the Land of Waves.
Not long after that, we departed the village.
The first part of the journey was peaceful enough.
Naruto complained loudly.
Sakura yelled at Naruto.
Sasuke ignored everyone.
Typical Team Seven.
I walked slightly behind Kakashi-sensei, letting their arguing fade into the background as I scanned our surroundings out of habit.
That was when I noticed it.
A puddle.
Right in the middle of the road.
I slowed slightly.
It hadn't rained in weeks.
Quietly, I slipped a kunai from my pouch before moving closer to Kakashi-sensei.
"Kakashi-sensei," I said softly.
Without looking away from his book, he replied, "So you noticed it too."
I nodded once.
"Stay alert," he murmured.
I dropped back beside the others without another word.
A few seconds later, the attack came.
Two shinobi burst from the puddle behind us, chains whipping through the air fast enough to blur. The metal wrapped around Kakashi-sensei before any of us could react.
Then they pulled.
Blood exploded outward.
My eyes widened as Kakashi's body tore apart into chunks of flesh.
Sakura screamed.
Naruto froze completely.
The two attackers immediately rushed forward, chains rattling violently behind them. Judging by their headbands, they were ninja from the Hidden Mist Village.
