Recovering

I woke up in yet another dark room.

For a few blissful seconds, I couldn't remember why.

Then I looked down at my wrist.

The bracelet was black.

My breath caught in my throat.

Itachi was dead.

The memory crashed into me all over again—his body collapsing, his forehead poke, his final smile.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

No.

Not now.

I refused to cry in front of him.

Slowly opening my eyes, I found Madara leaning against the opposite wall with his arms crossed.

"Don't you think this whole kidnapping thing is getting a little repetitive?" I asked coldly.

"It worked the first time," he replied.

I rolled my eyes.

Only then did I notice Sasuke lying nearby.

Immediately I moved toward him.

"He isn't dead," Madara said. "Though he might suffer permanent damage if someone doesn't treat him."

I glared at him.

"What do you want?"

"For starters? Heal him."

"Why should I do anything for you?"

A single eye stared at me through the mask.

"You won't do it for me."

His gaze shifted toward Sasuke.

"But you'll do it for him."

Damn him.

I hated that he was right.

Without another word, I knelt beside Sasuke and began examining his injuries.

The battle had done more damage than I initially thought.

As I worked, silence settled over the room.

Silence gave me too much time to think.

Too much time to remember.

Itachi's final words.

The feel of his hand in mine.

The kiss he'd pressed against my fingers.

The promise he'd made.

No matter what happens, my love for you will remain.

My vision blurred.

I quickly looked away before the tears could fall.

By the time I finished healing Sasuke, I felt exhausted.

I leaned back against the wall and waited.

Eventually, Sasuke stirred.

His eyes slowly opened.

For a moment he looked confused.

Then he remembered.

His gaze immediately searched the room.

"Itachi..."

The way he said the name shattered something inside me.

I lowered my eyes.

"He's dead."

Silence.

Then Sasuke closed his eyes.
