Finally, I arrived.

The two of them were still standing across from each other at the Final Valley, battered and exhausted beneath the towering statues of Hashirama and Madara.

For once, I was glad I hadn't arrived too late.

I stayed hidden high on the cliffside, concealed among the shadows as I watched the two most important boys in my life tear each other apart.

Naruto charged first.

In his hand swirled a sphere of chakra unlike anything I had ever seen before.

The Rasengan.

At the same moment, lightning screamed through Sasuke's hand as he unleashed the Chidori.

The two attacks collided violently.

The explosion shook the valley beneath them, sending both boys flying backward.

My heart clenched painfully.

This wasn't sparring anymore.

This wasn't rivalry.

This was desperation.

Sasuke activated the Curse Mark, dark markings spreading across his skin as his chakra twisted violently. Using the enhanced speed and strength it granted him, he overwhelmed Naruto and drove the Chidori toward him.

Naruto barely blocked the attack using the Nine-Tails' chakra.

The fox's chakra cloaked his body in violent red energy as he threw Sasuke away.

Even then, Naruto still kept trying to reason with him.

"Sasuke!" he shouted desperately. "You don't have to do this!"

But Sasuke rejected every word.

Every attempt to save him.

Still... there was something different in his expression now.

For the first time since this fight began, Sasuke looked at Naruto as an equal.

And at that exact moment, his Sharingan evolved.

Three tomoe.

My breath caught in my throat.

With his evolved Sharingan, Sasuke began predicting Naruto's movements perfectly, slowly turning the battle back in his favour.

But Naruto refused to give up.

The Nine-Tails' chakra exploded outward again, forming a terrifying cloak around him.

One tail.

One-tailed state.

The sheer pressure of it made the air feel heavy even from where I stood.

Naruto attacked wildly, the chakra cloak extending like living arms around him.

Even Sasuke struggled to keep up now.

So Sasuke did the one thing I had been dreading.

The Curse Mark spread fully across his body.

Second State.

My stomach dropped.

He looked less and less like himself with every passing second.

"This place..." Sasuke said quietly as they faced one another one final time. "This is the Final Valley."

Lightning shrieked violently in his hand once more.

Naruto answered with another Rasengan, this one cloaked in the Nine-Tails' chakra until it barely resembled the original technique anymore.
