Kabuto's smile returned as though it had never left.

But I had seen it.

That flicker.

That moment of discomfort.

Good.

"Now then," he said, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose, "where was I?"

"Stalling," I answered.

He chuckled.

"Explaining."

"Same thing."

Itachi lifted his hands into a seal.

"Then explain quickly."

Kabuto's gaze sharpened.

"While I speak, you'll attempt to place me under Genjutsu and force me to release the Reanimation Jutsu."

Itachi said nothing.

Kabuto smiled wider.

"Unfortunately for you, I know exactly what you're planning."

"Then you also know killing you won't help us," I said.

"Correct."

"So you're just going to stand there and brag?"

"Not brag."

His body began to shift.

The darkness around him seemed to move.

"Demonstrate."

Snakes erupted from beneath his cloak.

All three of us moved at once.

Itachi's Susanoo flared.

Sasuke's followed.

Mine rose a heartbeat later, still aching in my eyes from the strain of Madara's meteor.

The snakes struck the ribs of the Susanoo and shattered into pieces.

Except—

They weren't pieces.

They melted.

Liquid flesh pooled across the stone floor, writhing, separating, reforming.

Kabuto's voice echoed from somewhere in the cavern.

"The Hōzuki clan's ability to liquefy the body."

Suigetsu.

I glanced at Sasuke.

His expression told me he had made the same connection.

"And of course, Uzumaki vitality and healing."

"Karin," I muttered.

My stomach turned.

Kabuto was collecting people like tools.

Like ingredients.

Like pieces of a puzzle he could wear.

"Which means," I said, narrowing my eyes, "you took something from Jūgo too."

Kabuto laughed.

"Well done."

His voice slithered through the cave.

"However, this is no mere curse mark."

The air changed.

Thickened.

Natural energy.

My eyes widened.

"No."

Kabuto finally emerged from the shadows.
