The Fourth Division moved across the desert beneath a brutal sun.
Sand stretched endlessly in every direction.
No trees.
No cover.
No mercy.
Just heat, wind, and the knowledge that somewhere ahead of us, the enemy was waiting.
Then Gaara stopped.
Immediately, the entire unit halted behind him.
His sand rose in a thin stream, spreading across the distance like an unseen eye.
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then his expression changed.
"There are five."
I stepped closer.
"Who?"
His voice remained calm, but I could feel the shift in him.
"Among them is my father."
My chest tightened.
Before I could respond, he continued.
"The Second Mizukage. The Second Tsuchikage. The Third Raikage."
He paused.
"And one of the Legendary Sannin."
My head snapped toward him.
"Sannin?"
Gaara looked at me.
"Can I see?"
Before he could answer, a snake slid from my sleeve and vanished beneath the sand.
Through its eyes, I saw them.
Five figures standing together.
Four I recognized from history books.
And one—
My breath stopped.
No.
No.
It couldn't be.
She looked exactly as I remembered.
Long dark hair.
The same face.
The same posture.
The same woman who used to kneel in front of me and brush dirt from my knees when I fell.
Only her eyes were wrong.
Black.
Hollow.
Dead.
My snake froze.
So did I.
"(Y/N)?" Gaara asked quietly.
I couldn't breathe.
"It's my mother."
The words barely made it out.
Gaara's eyes softened.
I forced myself to swallow.
"Chiharu Uchiha."
The name felt like a wound reopening.
"I thought I was looking for Itachi."
My voice trembled.
"I wasn't ready for her."
No one said anything.
Because there was nothing to say.
