As soon as I returned to the village, I found myself buried beneath mountains of paperwork.
Apparently, becoming the leader of the Allied Shinobi Forces came with significantly more responsibilities than anyone had bothered warning me about.
Reports.
Strategies.
Supply routes.
Alliance agreements.
I spent so much time signing documents that I barely had time to think.
Which was probably a good thing.
If I stopped long enough to think, I'd remember that my biological brother was alive.
That Sasuke wanted me dead.
That Itachi was gone.
That the world was on the brink of war.
So I worked.
And worked.
And worked.
Until one morning, I found myself standing outside a meeting room beside Kakashi-sensei.
Lady Tsunade was still unconscious.
Danzo was dead.
And the village elders was preparing to officially name Kakashi the Sixth Hokage.
I folded my arms and leaned against the wall.
"You're nervous," I observed.
Kakashi's visible eye curved.
"You're one to talk."
I looked away.
Fair point.
The doors opened.
We entered.
One of the elders cleared his throat.
"Kakashi Hatake, I hereby appoint you as—"
The doors burst open.
Everyone jumped.
Guy-sensei stood in the doorway, breathing heavily.
"I have urgent news!"
The room fell silent.
Guy's grin widened.
"Lady Tsunade has awakened!"
For a moment, my brain stopped functioning.
Then I ran.
I didn't wait for permission.
I didn't wait for explanations.
I just ran.
Past startled nurses.
Past confused shinobi.
Past anyone unfortunate enough to be standing in my way.
I slammed open the hospital door.
And froze.
Tsunade was sitting upright in bed.
Eating.
Of course she was eating.
The woman woke up from a coma and immediately demanded food.
I stood there staring.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Tsunade glanced up.
The moment our eyes met, her expression softened.
That was all it took.
