CHAPTER 39:
Emma's POV:
My mom looks up and is stunned by Jeremy's outfit.
"Is that Ethan's?"my mom asks with wide eyes. My dad looks up at her words and is surprised. I just nod my head at them. They are reminded of their lost son, they loved him just as much. We miss him everyday.
"It looks good on you" my mom says to Jeremy and pats his head lightly, a motherly gesture.
"Thank you" he says. We eat breakfast and talk about random stuff. The morning incident is long forgotten. We settle in the living room to exchange gifts.
"Go get your presents, and place them under the tree" my dad says. We do as he says and sit on the floor in a circle. Jeremy bought gifts for my parents, I didn't even realise.
We do it differently here. All the gifts are wrapped in the same gift wrap and no name is written. So, you don't know who gave it.
"Dad, you go first" I insist. He chuckles but opens his gifts. He receive a watch, a long black robe and a box full of cookies.
Mom goes next and she receives and apron and cookbook and a robe that matches my dad's. Jeremy gets a basketball signed jersey, a pair of sneakers and formal buttoned up shirt. I get a new MacBook, a new pair of sneakers that match Jeremy's and a framed photo of our whole family. After we open our gifts we take a seat on the couch.
"What time is your flight?" My dad asks us. I look at Jeremy because even I don't know.
"It's at 6 in the evening" Jeremy says.
"Ohh.. you'll leave so soon?" My mom says to me.
"We have to. We have our exams coming up" I say, a little sad.
"I wish you could've stayed" my mom says.
"I wish too. But next time, I'll stay for long." I promise her. We talk for some more time and eat lunch and then head back upstairs to pack our bags. Jeremy gets his suitcase in my room so we can pack together. We are alone in the room when he asks me something I have been dreading to answer.
"So, how come you never told me about your brother?" He asks me but doesn't look up and keeps packing his bags.
"You never asked and I never got the chance to tell you" I say and shrug my shoulders.
"Oh okay" he says. I can't tell whether he is bothered or not. He looks fine to me but it might be different. I try distracting him.
"Thanks for the MacBook" I say to him with gratitude. He looks up, surprised.
"I didn't gift it to you" he lies, oh so smoothly.
"I know you did" I say.
"How?" He gives in.
"Only you know how shitty my laptop has been lately. But you didn't have to" I say to him.
"I know but I wanted to. I couldn't think of anything else." He says.
"But it's such an expensive gift. And for that reason, you can take it back" I say and hand it back to him.
