(Levi's POV)
For the next three days, it's been nothing but non-stop work for us. The scouts who knew about automail, so Eren, Mikasa, Hange, Moblit, Armin, Jean, Connie, Sasha, Historia and me were all put to work. We each had our jobs to do so that Erwin can have his metal arm within the three days:
Eren, Mikasa and Edward went on trips outside the walls to find the necessary metals.
Hange and Historia stayed by Winry, handing her tools and helping her in anyway they could.
Armin, Moblit and Jean made sure that nobody outside the 10 of us would suspect that Erwin was actually still in bed and they brought the paperwork that was being delivered from Erwin's office to my office.
Sasha and Connie guarded the front door of the room.
And I had to basically take over Erwin's job. His paperwork, his files and the reports he received from other regiments had to be read, filled, sorted and some replies had to be sent. I never had trouble doing office work, but what Erwin had to do surpasses what I usually have to do.None of us really had a chance to sleep for those three days. The trio that had to go get supplies, were constantly finding themselves with tools, materials or food to find in Trost or outside. Hange and Historia were always by Winry's side, making sure that she was able to do her work. The two guards had to stay awake, no questions asked. The three cover ups, were the only one who'd get a couple hours of sleep per day but their work was still exhausting and frustrating. Winry was probably the one doing the best without sleep, she was clearly used to all nighters because she was doing her work without even stopping for much longer than to bite into something. I didn't get to rest much either, but I did manage to find some time to sleep when the desk wasn't overflowed with paperwork.
But then the big day arrived, night number three was over, and Hange walked around the base to get all of us into Erwin's room, saying that the arm was finally finished. I went into the room, where some of the others were already there. Eren looked like shit, his eyes were frighteningly dim and he had dirt all over his trousers and shirt. Mikasa wasn't better, she was a bit pale and had bruises and cuts all over her hands and face. Hange had dark circles around her eyes and she wasn't hyperactive at all. Historia was doing her best to smile but she was so tired that it came out as more of a crooked grin that made her look pitiful. Sasha was leaning on Connie, gripping her stomach that was growling with hunger and she looked sick, as far as Connie goes he was drenched in sweat and his skin was tinted a bit green. Edward didn't look too bad in comparison, except for his hair that was a mess, his clothes were torn and filthy and his posture was similar to an old man's.
The last three came in, and even those who had the most opportunities to rest looked like crap. Armin eyes were dark and his hands were dry and filled with paper cuts and healing scabs. Moblit was doing his best to stand straight, but he was so tired that he immediately leaned against the wall for support. And Jean's cheek were sunken and I'm pretty sure he lost a bit of weight.
I mentally slapped myself to stay awake then went to Erwin's side to take a look. The arm itself, looked a lot like Edward's, except that it was bigger but it seemed somewhat more frail.
"I would like to thank all of you for your time, you worked so hard just so that I could get this new limb, thank you very much." Erwin said, inclining his head.
"No problem sir." answered Eren.
"Yeah, don't worry about it Erwin, it was worth it." Hange said.
"Does it hurt or pinch anywhere?" asked Winry.
"No."
"Can you move it?"
He lifted his new right arm, clenched the fingers in a fist and we all sighed in relief. At least all our hard work didn't go down the drain. He go out of the bed, and rolled his shoulder several times then looked at his arm, satisfied.
"Winry Rockbell, I can't thank you enough for what you have done for me." he said, bowing down to her.
"No, please. It was truly the least I can do, after all, for the past months, you've been helping me with resources and a safe place. I should be the one thanking you." she smiled.
He walked to me and put his hand on my shoulder.
"You're the one who took my responsibilities during my time out of commision right Levi?"
"Goddamn right I was." I said.
"Then you must know what happens now right?"
"Yeah." I said before looking at the cadets. "I must put together a new special operation squad. Eren, Mikasa, Jean, Armin, Connie, Sasha and Historia, you are now permanent members of my squad until your deaths. As for Edward, you are a temporary member, you will be in this squad until you get home. Tomorrow you all can sleep for the whole day, but after that we will have to go to our outpost outside of Trost."
The cadets looked at each other and nodded. Most of them had nervous looks in their eyes, some didn't really care but really caught my attention, were the two reckless brats' orbs that were shining with determination and excitement. And I smirk discreetly.
Damn brats.
