Chapter 38

(3rd POV)

Armin woke up to familiar excited squeals and to a white light shining so brightly that he could see it through his eyelids. They fluttered open and he saw the sky, except for some reason, there was this other light that was practically blinding him coming from in front of him. He sat up and immediately regretted it, because there was a bright circle of white light, it was stagnant, just staying there immobile and still. Hange was jumping around it, observing every inch of it while the others just tried to determine what it was. Then suddenly Erne finally noticed he was awake and ran towards him, quickly followed by Mikasa and Edward then the everybody else.

"Armin! How are you?" asked Jean.

"I'm okay."

"Does anything hurt?" asked Mikasa.

"No."

"Do you remember what happened?" asked Levi.

"No..."

Then Eren told him everything that went down after defeating the shifters, how Levi had decided to save him instead of Erwin, how Armin ate Bertholdt and became a primal titan then the white circle that appeared out of nowhere and finally how they brought him and Sasha there to be able to look at it closely.

"But why? Why didn't you save the commander? He was obviously the more reasonable choice." mumbled Armin.

"You're two little moronic friends here insisted that you are the one that will be able to save humanity and besides, Erwin was ready to leave this world." replied Levi pressing on Eren and Mikasa's heads.

"But enough about that!" interrupted Hange. "Somebody tell me what this is?!"

She got back up and went to the circle she poked it and it immediately zapped her. She helped in pain before oooing and ahhing in wonder.

"Oi shitty glasses, just because poor Moblit isn't here anymore means you can just die stupidly." hissed Levi.

"You're right, besides, we have more pressing matters to attend to, lets go to the basement." announced Hange, becoming serious again.

Levi, Mikasa, Eren and Edward put their gear in their hips, ready to get off the wall. Hange was about to join them when she handed a flare gun to Mustang.

"You're the adult, at the slightest sign of trouble or anything at all, shoot this." she said.

Mustang nodded and joined Connie and Jean who were changing Sasha's bandages. Hange then jumped off the wall and followed the other four who were already waiting for her at the foot of Wall Maria.

They traversed the city, street by street, looking at the collateral damage done to the buildings and roads. Eren and Mikasa felt random pangs of sadness as they remembered the once lively town they used to frolic carelessly in five year ago. Then they suddenly stopped in front of a house with a huge boulder crushing the roof.

"Is that your house?" asked Levi.

Eren nodded then they made their way through the rubble, making sure to not do anything that could make the boulder fall over. Once they got to the trapdoor, Edward clapped the ground, moving the ground to push the debris away from the basement entrance. Then they turned on their lamps and descended to the wooden door. Eren fumbled with the key on his neck but when he tried to insert it, a small frown appeared on his face.

"What? What is it?" asked Levi.

"It doesn't fit..."

"Well fuck." Edward said.

The captain didn't say anything, instead he kicked down the door so hard that it came down immediately. He went in first, then the others followed him. Inside, there were books, lined up and organised and there were a bunch of labelled bottles on the shelves and a dusty desk with blank papers and quills.
