Chapter 34

(Edward's POV)

"What. The. Hell. Is. This?" I said looking down.

Below Wall Rose that we were all standing on, was at least two hundred people. Trost's population had crowded at the foot of the wall, cheering with banners, pots and pans and anything that could supposedly encourage us. In front of them I recognized Dimo's son who was a the head of procession, yelling at the top of his lungs a bunch of things I couldn't hear over the sound of everybody else.

"Is this what approval sounds like?" asked Armin, who was standing on my left.

"What, do you always get booed?" Mustang asked, looking at him.

"As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time we get a send off like this." replied Erwin.

"Well we didn't join the scouts to get appreciation." reminded Levi.

Suddenly Connie, Sasha and Jean started to shout back at them. Thanking them for their support, tears in their eyes.

"They seem to be enjoying it." said Mikasa looking at them.

Then it was Erwin's turn to shout at them:
"TODAY WE COMMENCE THE OPERATION TO SHIGANSHINA DISTRICT! WE WILL RETAKE WALL MARIA!"

The crowd went wild, pumping their fists in the air as the elevators went up the wall to take us and the horses down. Once we were lowered to the ground, Erwin yelled at us for a second then we moved forwards. The commander leading the charge, followed by the squad commanders then the elite squad and finally the newer recruits.

And that was the start of the long, long ride to the southern district of Wall Maria.

time skip, hours later

We had just started hiking down the mountain a couple hours ago. The ride had taken a lot longer than when it was just Levi and me and it was already nearing the end of the night and the sun was rising. We all had to pull our hoods up to make sure that Bertholdt and Reiner couldn't identify Eren and we were all a bit on edge.

"Where is the foot of this thing?" asked Mustang. "It's never ending..."

"From here, it's only a little more than 900 ft to the foot, then we should be able to see Shiganshina." I told him.

I looked behind me and saw Mikasa and Armin trying to comfort Eren as his hand on the lamp trembled like a leaf.

Jeez. It must be stressful for him...

I decided to let his childhood friends deal with him, I didn't want to seem insensitive, but I sort of know what it's like to lose your home. Except that I burned mine down myself, so it's not really the same.

So I kept my eyes in front of me as we walked towards what could be the biggest battle of their lives.

timeskip (Eren's POV)

We had just got out of the forest and we speeding towards Shiganshina urging the horses to go as fast as they possibly could. Once we were within range, the commander ordered to switch to maneuver gear so we all shot out hooks to the wall. We pulled off the horses and flew to the top, Edward holding on to Mustang. Once we were, we split up, Hange, Moblit, Levi, Mikasa, Sasha, Connie and Jean, their hoods still up, escorted me to the outer breach. We ran on top of the wall, not daring to slow down.

As I shot casual glances at the destroyed city, memories of my childhood emerged, mostly the ones featuring titans. It was scary, to have to have to see that again, Mom getting eaten alive, the city being reduced to rubble, the ugly faces of those monsters, but then a strange rage emerged and I wasn't afraid anymore.

No way in hell am I going to let a bunch of traitors and titans steal what is rightfully ours. I will kill them, then we will be free.

Once we got to the outer gate, I jumped off the edge, securing my grappling hooks on the wall then right over the crack, I transformed and immediately hardened my titan body. Once I was done, I tore out of the nape, and Mikasa pulled me out before bringing me on the wall.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah, my gear isn't broken but I lost my cape." I answered, checking my gas canisters.

She handed me hers that I put on before pulling the hood on my face.

"Any titans?" I asked.

"None in sight." answered Hange. "The hole?"

"Sealed tight." confirmed Levi, looking over the edge.

I looked over with him and saw that that damn breach was closed, hopefully for good.

"Don't think we're done here yet Eren. We still have a few more people to kill." Levi told me.

"Yes sir!"

Suddenly a smoke signal coming from where Erwin, Edward, Mustang and Armin were flew up. Hange immediately stopped us and told us to wait for orders. But then we saw someone appear from inside the wall where the other scouts were tapping.

It was Reiner.

I was about to shout something, I can't remember what, but it died before it could leave my throat because Edward had already jumped off the wall, arm turned into a blade. He had a vengeful look in his gold eyes as his blade went through Reiner's heart. We ran towards them, as he fell to the ground with Reiner in tow. But when the bastard's body started to spasm, very much alive, Edward ripped his arm out and hooked himself on the wall.

"Dammit!" shouted the alchemist. "So close!"

"Edward! You okay?!" asked Armin who was nearby.

He didn't answer, he just watched in dismay as Reiner transformed into the Armored Titan when he landed on the ground.

But that was the least of our problems, because suddenly I heard someone shout something and point at the other side of the wall. I turned my head, and there stood the Beast Titan, surrounded by several 15 meter class titans.

Levi was right. This battle is only getting started.
