Chapter 2: The Hunt
The elk herd panicked. The injured cow elk sprinted away, yet Hunter easily caught up with her, as she was limping, and Andromeda followed him, grabbing on to the cow elk's leg.
Hunter took the side, and they ran with her, wearing the cow elk down. She was slowing, quickly, rapidly.
Pleased, Andromeda called out quietly, so the elk couldn't hear. "Hunter, hurry up and try near the throat," she said. "It can't run much longer, so we should be able to—argh!" She stopped speaking with a muffled yell. The elk had ran straight into a tree, dragging Andromeda and Hunter with her.
The cow elk gave a screech, making Hunter wince, and Andromeda growl softly; the elk stopped making whatever sound she was making. Andromeda nearly sighed in relief, before catching herself.
"Thank Misty," muttered Hunter. "That elk will destroy my ears!"
The elk kicked. If Andromeda had not been paying attention, the elk's kick would've landed straight into her stomach, and she wouldn't have been able to hunt, or walk, for that matter, for days, or weeks, or months, or years, or, anyone could get the picture—forever.
Luckily, however, the elk seemed to be in a panicky state, and had missed by a good metre; Andromeda, like she should be, felt quite relieved, since she could see the rest of the herd beginning to notice what was happening, and were staring at Andromeda, Hunter, and the cow elk they were trying to eat.
Andromeda's fangs tore into the elk's coat, spilling blood. It was a taste she wasn't used to—she had eaten meat all her life, but the blood of a still living animal spilling onto her taste buds wasn't something she was very used to.
Hunter slipped down, loosing his grip on the elk's throat. Of course, Andromeda thought. Of course that had to happen. But she knew she couldn't blame Hunter on his mistake—everybody made mistakes, and if he learnt from them, there was no harm done. It didn't mean she had to be happy about it, though.
She was still clinging onto the elk, but her thoughts began to drift. It seemed the memory of the relic, shaped like a snowflake, she realized: she had seen that before, she just couldn't remember where. It had represented someone, someone important. But who? She growled in frustration. The elk shrieked, and she growled again, but much louder.
"Andromeda!"
Andromeda looked at Hunter, who appeared to be quite frightened. She motioned for him to continue. "'Dromeda, we have to finish this hunt quickly. The Guards are approaching." He looked worried, like the event had not exactly gone the way he'd planned.
Andromeda nodded, silencing the cow elk, once and for all.
