Chapter 30: First Steps of the Young Ones

"We're going out today," Hunter told the pups, Robin, Horizon, and Hope. "Into the real world." It was one of the last days of spring, and Hunter and Ruby had decided that their pups were now old enough to go outside.
"Really, dada?" Hope asked, her eyes wide. "Can we go outside now?" Horizon stood next to her, looking equally puzzled, and hopeful.
"Yes," Hunter said.
"Race you outside!" Robin said, already dashing to the den's entrance.
"Robin! Don't go by yourself," Ruby sighed. But, Robin had already dashed out of the den and was singing to himself as he pranced, confident that neither Horizon Nor Hope would catch up.
Hunter saw Robin behind a tree, looking triumphant, when he walked up. He picked up the pup by the scruff of the neck and brought him to his siblings, ignoring his protests.
Ruby spoke: "The world is very dangerous for pups like you. Predators will try and hunt you the moment they get a whiff that you're around. Luckily, we have a whole rebellion to protect you, but still."
The pups nodded, Robin more confidently. Then Hunter led the way, beckoning for the pups to follow. They did, Ruby behind them, making sure they wouldn't be eaten.
Andromeda was already outside the den, waiting. Her eyes lit up when she saw the three pups.
"I'm your aunt," she explained. "Andromeda."
"Aunt Andromeda," Robin and Horizon chorused, sounding confident.
"Aunty Dromeda!" Hope giggled.
Andromeda smiled and nuzzled her, making Hope wag her tail. She did not back away. Maybe she understood that having an "aunt" usually meant that you were related to that wolf.
Crescent walked in. In less than a month, she would have her pups, and she wanted to watch Hunter and Ruby raise their three so she could learn to mother.
"I'm Crescent," Crescent smiled. "Not any other name." Her eyes darkened.
Hope giggled again. "Cwesent!"
Robin stared at his sister with a mix of pity and laughter. "No, Crescent." He said.
Horizon nodded, smiling. "Crescent."
"Oh no," Hunter said, a smile making its way to his lips. "Here's my mother."
Diamond smiled, and went to great her "grandchildren."
