Chapter 9: Hunt Without a Hunter
Ruby hadn't spent much time with Hunter at the Healing Den before she was called by an overexcited Emerald to go hunt. She had agreed, knowing it was pointless to argue when Emerald was so keen, though she had noticed Diamond seemed more concerned than she would be about a wolf, and it took a while to convince her to come along. "He'll be fine," Emerald had told Ruby and Diamond. "My stomach is rumbling for elk, anyway." Ruby cursed her silently for her insensitivity. Diamond glared at Emerald, too. "He just found his injured father!" Diamond snapped. "How can you be so insensitive?!" Emerald huffed and walked ahead of them. Ruby shook her head, and though, you're too insensitive, Emerald. You'll never be Hunter's mate. Although she felt triumphant, she felt a prickle of guilt stab her stomach. Emerald and Diamond liked Hunter, too. "Let's go hunt, Diamond," Ruby told her sister gently, when Emerald wasn't listening. "Don't mind her." Ruby was aware that Hunter could always choose Emerald, despite what she and Diamond thought, but she knew he wouldn't. Or she hoped. It wasn't hard to find elk. They were sitting just some distance away from the camp where all the wolves lived, seeming like they were chilling. Ruby smiled. They would take the element of surprise, springing on their target when the elk wasn't looking. It would be a perfect catch. And they could give some to Hunter. "You do the chaser," Diamond said, still looking angry at Emerald. "Ruby will herd, and I'll kill. Don't argue," she snapped, as Emerald opened her mouth to retaliate. Emerald glared at her. Ruby knew Diamond's bad mood had just worsened. Very badly. Before she could say anything to her sisters, Emerald was charging at the chosen target: a injured young cow. Ruby had the smallest amount of time to position herself, watching as Emerald charged with the elk. When it came close enough, she ran alongside it, guiding it towards Diamond. Please, please, please cooperate, Ruby thought, silently praying. Diamond was just up ahead when Ruby grabbed on to the elk's leg, drawing blood, and Emerald took the other leg, slowing the elk down almost completely. Diamond seemed to understand now was her chance, as she dived straight for the elk's throat, biting hard, and drawing a bloodcurling and pained screech from the elk, who was now dead.
