Chapter 21: Pups of the Sky

"LET ME GO INSIDE!" Hunter yelled at Borealis, who was holding him back. "THAT'S MY MATE—AND MY PUPS!"
"Be quiet, Hunter," Andromeda said from behind him. "We know it's Ruby, but if you scream, she might become scared, and something may happen to the pups. Don't worry: Midnight's with her."
Hunter stopped screaming, but he didn't stop struggling. He struggled and Borealis held him, nearly breaking free, and Birch held him back, too. He struggled more.
Then, as Hunter was about to start yelling himself hoarse again—
"It's done," came Midnight's voice, from Hunter and Ruby's nursery den in their cave. Everyone stopped what they were doing, including Hunter. "There are three of them. Two boys and a girl, I think. I'm coming out now, but we need you in, Hunter. Ruby wants help with names." She climbed out of the den.
This time, Birch and Borealis didn't hold Hunter back when he charged into the den. He nearly knocked a couple of stones over as he slowed down his pace in the narrow tunnel, leading to the good-sized den where Ruby would keep her pups for their first month, their first four weeks, of life, until they were big enough to take on the world.
"Ruby?" Hunter called softly. He slowed his pace. "Are you there?" He could see her shape at the edge of the den.
"Yeah," Ruby said, and her voice was slightly cracked. Hunter sat next to her and nuzzled her, and then looked at the three pups cuddled up at her stomach, squirming for milk.
As Midnight had said, there were three pups. Two males, and a female. The first male was the biggest, and he was grey, like Hunter. The second male was bigger than the female, but not as big as his brother, and he was black with a white dot on his left eye. The third was the only female. Grey, but darker than her brother. Her eyes were closed, but Hunter wished he could see her eye colour.
"I think we should name the black male Robin," Ruby said softly, nuzzling the pup she had just named. Hunter nodded, then looked at the female.
He waited, thinking of a name, then looked at Ruby, who was looking at the grey male. "This one can be Horizon," she said, touching noses with Horizon. Now, she looked at Hunter, and he thought of a name that would suit the new pup. She gave him so much faith, and he loved her so, and she gave him...
"Hope," Hunter said, and he licked the small female's head. "She will be Hope."
