Chapter 31: Puppies of the Mountains
There were four of them, beautiful and fragile and the most delicate things on the planet. Two males, two females. Two were snow-white, furry and warm with baby blue eyes, and two had the coat of their mystery father, black yet brown and small white dots on their noses. The males where the black ones, the females were white. It couldn't be easier to split them up. Crescent gazed down at them, her eyes squinting to see their shape. Andromeda and Ruby sat next to her, replacing the father who had not stuck around long enough to realize the consequences of what he had done. They nuzzled the pups and licked them clean, while Crescent lay, head in the dirt. "You have to name them, Crescent," Andromeda said, nudging her sister up so she was looking directly at the four pups cuddled by her side, squirming for milk, and their eyes shut helplessly. "I don't know," Crescent said. "How did you and Hunter name your pups, Ruby?" Ruby furrowed her eyebrows, her mind probably again drifting to her three pups, waiting outside for their father and the outcome of their new cousins. "Hunter named Hope, for some reason I couldn't comprehend-I think he gave her hope or something-I named Robin because he made a lot of noise, and it would be cool to have a pup sharing the same initial as myself. Horizon because, well, I don't know, he seemed like a daydreamer and very distant, also sensible." Crescent nodded gratefully. "Thanks," she said. "I guess I'll name the two white females Moondancer and Starlight. Moondancer can be the one with the black dot near her eye." She stared at her two named pups, then at the males. "What about Endurance and Justice?" She had never heard those types of names before, and they seemed original: so, maybe their personality would suit that? "Then, they will be called Endurance and Justice," Andromeda said. Ruby nodded. "They're good names, Crescent. All of them." Andromeda nodded, beckoning for Ruby to follow her. With one last smile at Crescent, she exited the den, Andromeda gazing at the pups before trotting off.
