Chapter 47: Spirits of the Dead
"Hunter!"
Hunter turned around, hearing a familiar voice calling his name. Shocked and a little scared, he observed that he was in the exact spot when the she-wolf had attacked him in his dream. Was he dreaming now?
"Hunter!"
This time, he peered into the shadows, where the voice had been coming from. He sensed a slight bit of movement, so he stepped forward gingerly. His eyes squinted, making out the shape of a female wolf, only slightly smaller than himself. Then he recognized her—of course. She was Ruby.
"Ruby?" Hunter asked, baffled. When Ruby nodded, he bounded forward joyfully and nuzzled her. "You're alive?"
Ruby's smile melted a little, but she put it back on. "No, Hunter, I'm dead," she said softly. "I have visited you from the Star-Den, place of the dead. You must stay strong for my sisters, for Sapphire, and for our pups. I am dead, Hunter, but I am still with you. Do you understand me?" She smiled.
"Yes," Hunter said, "but is this real? Or is it just a dream?"
Ruby sighed. "Of course it's a dream, Hunter. I wouldn't just be able to come alive. But just because it's a dream, doesn't mean it's not real. I'm here, Hunter, and I'm speaking to you."
"Oh."
Ruby grinned, her face bright, just like the times when she was alive and happy. It made tears build up in Hunter's vision, and he swallowed thickly. "Don't worry, Hunter, it'll be fine. I'll come back to you somehow, though I can never be alive again."
"That's not possible," Hunter said, sadly.
Ruby shrugged.
After a moment of silence, where Hunter sat and stared at Ruby quietly, trying to remember the times when they were together and happy. Then he asked a question he wasn't sure how she would react to: "Ruby, what did kill you? I mean, who? Which wolf? If it was Saeva, I'm going to kill her. Or if it was that Amandi, her son, I'll hate him."
"Saeva's dead," Ruby laughed. "You can't kill her. Andromeda did that. Plus, it wasn't her or Amandi."
"Wait," Hunter said. "If she's dead, is she up there, with you? Isn't it loathsome to be in a place with the most vile villain of all times? Is she there, Ruby?"
"Goodness, no!" Ruby said. "A wolf who is that evil goes to the Fire-Den, burning and rotting even in afterlife."
"Good," Hunter said. "Who did kill you, then?"
"Please don't be mad, Hunter—" Ruby hesitated. "But it was Borealis."
Hunter's eyes turned to slits. They became darker, and he growled. "BOREALIS?" He screeched. "BUT I TRUSTED HIM! THAT IDIOT, THAT GLONX, THAT IMPOSTER, THAT WHINY, MANGY, COWARDLY, BACK-STABBER!"
"Hunter!" Ruby yelled, affectively stopping his tyrant. "It wasn't his fault. He was corrupted, and didn't have much will to be with us, so Saeva used magic to corrupt him. He didn't know what he was doing when he killed me. And he's dead now. Saeva ripped him to shreads, because he had enough will to not kill Aurora."
"Alright, then," sighed Hunter. "But I thought he really wanted to help us?"
Ruby shrugged again.
Another moment of silence passed, until Ruby spoke up. "They're calling me now, from up there. I have to go, Hunter, but I'll see you again." Hunter opened his mouth, but she had already vanished.
