Chapter 24: Youngsters
"I got you food, Ruby," Hunter said, as he walked into the den where his children and mate were waiting. "It's caribou."
As soon as Hunter had settled into Skystar, he realized that the prey was slightly different. Alongside the elk, moose, mule deer, and bison, there was also caribou, which he and his sister had hunted and found to be quite delicious. So he had let Ruby taste caribou, and she had agreed that it was very tasty—her new favourite.
"Thanks, Hunter," Ruby said, tugging lightly on the tail of Robin, who was trying to escape the den.
Hunter dropped the caribou leg in front of Ruby, and then licked Robin's head. "What a cheeky little pup you are," he murmured. Then he looked up thoughtfully, seeing Ruby's amused expression. "Well, I can't blame you, can I? I was a cheeky little pup too, Andromeda says."
Robin squeaked. "Yah!" his voice was high pitched and adorable, but he seemed to think it sounded brave and mighty. "Andwomeda!" Hunter's face broke out into a grin. He heard Ruby giggle behind him, and marvelled, again, at the fact he was a father now, with three pups... he smiled at his family.
"Horizon, Hope, are you being good for mommy?" Hunter asked, turning his attention to the other two pups of the litter, as Robin chased a butterfly that had somehow wandered into the den. Horizon spun around, looking excited.
"Me good pup," he squeaked. "I be gwood fwor mommy." He giggled, trying to catch Hunter's tail. Hunter laughed. "That's good," he told his younger son. "What about you, Hope?" Hope turned around to look at him. She had been in deep thought again. She bit her lip.
"I twink I be good," she said quietly, in a voice much higher than the boys'. "Mommy says I be gwood girwl." Her ocean-blue eyes were big as she looked at Hunter. "I good, wight?" Hunter chuckled, and he nodded, nuzzling his daughter and touching his nose to hers. Although he was a bit sad that she wouldn't play with her siblings, and would never speak unless someone specifically asked her, he knew, (hoped), she was normal.
Taking advantage of the silence, Robin said, "when we meet Andwomeda?" he looked excited, almost as excited as Andromeda had been when she had found out she'd be meeting the pups in just two weeks, now. Well, nobody could be as excited as Andromeda was now. She was completely hyped up. Hunter had never seen anybody as excited as she was.
"I'll see you all in a bit, okay?" Hunter asked, speaking to nobody in particular. He touched noses with his mate and each of his pups, before exiting the den and heading out for his meeting with the leaders of the Skystar Rebellion.
