"My mom"

Those two words were enough to put a very confused expression on Ross's face.

He knew her mother had been dead for long now, so what she was saying made absolutely no sense.

"What?" he manage to question, and her eyebrows furrowed "I know I sound crazy, trust me I do" she shook her head.

"But she's been protecting me for a while now. Every time I was upset, confused, stressed she'd pop up and talk to me and calm down my nerves. Her latest act was saving me from my own head" Laura explained.

Yet it still made no sense to him.

"Laura- your mother-"

"She's dead" she interrupted his sentence "Yes, I'm aware. I'm not saying she is indeed alive. Whenever I see her she's in a ghostly form, surrounded by the bright light of the sun. She's always floating when she speaks to me Ross. Please believe me. I know what I see. It's no dream or hallucination"

"I believe you" he whispered.

"You do?" she gasped, staring at him with her eyes widen.

That single sentence meant the world to her.

"Yes, but I'm still trying to understand. I've never heard of that happening, but she doesn't sound like a danger to you but more so the opposite, almost like... a guardian angel watching over you" he shrugged.

"Yeah" Laura murmured "I just don't know how I'm able to see her"

"Have you tried asking her?" Ross suggested.

"I have, but any time I bring it up she answers with another fact or question. She's always ignoring it" Laura shrugged "I didn't even know what that creature was at the start but the more she reappeared the more of her I could see, until I realized that it was my own mother"

"Are you... okay?" he asked, genuinely concerned.

Seeing her dead mother speak to her like nothing happened after so many years of mourning her death could not be easy.

He wouldn't know what he would do if he ever saw his father again.

"I don't know" Laura shrugged, biting on her lower lip "It feels good to have her with me ... you know, even though she's not in her full form. I've missed her but.... I just- it's hard an-"

"Shhh you don't need to explain" he soothed her when noticing her voice tremble, seeming like she was about to tear up.

He wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders and held her close, looking down at her "I can imagine. I'm sorry"

"You're great" she pressed her lips, suddenly looking up at him with a teary smile "Thank you. I thought you'd think I was crazy"

Their faces stood inches away from each other.

"It's hard to grasp the concept I'll admit" he spoke up "But nothing's too out of reach when magic comes into play"

"Yeah" she murmured, then looked down, simply enjoying the feeling of his chest against her head, listening to his steady heartbeat.

"I'd advice you told nan Elenor about this though" he spoke in her ear "She knows magic better than us youngsters and could help you figure out what's going on. We'll check the magic books again too"

His effort to try and help made a smile easily grow on her face.

"Thank you Ross. I'll tell her" Laura nodded "I need to"
