Chapter 22: Why Do You Still Try?
It was late at night, probably two, three, in the morning. The sky was inky black, the stars were visible and the moon was shining brightly above. Peter sighed as he stared at the sky. The view was amazing at the tower, don't get him wrong, but you don't get to see the stars like this. So visible, so bright, so close. Peter couldn't sleep and had found his way outside and sat at the edge of the docks. The wind circled around Peter as he stargazed.
'They're still watching over you.'
"What?" Peter asked the voice.
'May, Ben and all the others. They're up there and watching over you.'
Peter furrowed his eyebrows. "When did you become so... nice?"
'Am I?'
Peter thought about it. Something about this voice was different. It had a soft gentle tone. Not the harsh, sarcastic, sassy one. This voice gave a warm feeling and not the pit in your stomach feeling.
"Who are you?"
'I'm you.' The voice seemed to giggle at Peter's question. It was as if it was a five-year-old.
"But I've never heard you before and you don't even sound like me."
'Well no duh silly. Of course, you've never heard me. I appeared earlier today.'
"Where's the 'I hate you, you fail at everything' voice?" Peter asked with a sarcastic tone.
The voice seemed to giggled again but it didn't answer.
"Why do you still try?"
"What?" Peter was taken back. Not by the question but the tone it was asked. The innocent, sweet tone was suddenly replaced with a serious one.
"Why do you still try? Why do you try to save the world?" It elaborated. "There's so much wrong in this world, so why try to save it?"
Peter thought about it. He kept thinking for more reasons and different answers but one seemed to keep coming back. "Because it's an imperfect world but it's the only one we got."
It hummed, as if it was satisfied with his answer. Peter waited it to say something but it never did. Things went quiet and the only thing that could be heard was the water and wind. Suddenly in the water was an orange glow. Peter's eyes widened as he stood up. The orange glow grew brighter and, in a flash, something emerged from the water.
Peter squinted as the harsh orange light appeared in front of him. The light dimmed and Peter's mouth dropped. In front of him was a broken soul stone. A sudden wave of déjà vu hit him.
"Now show me how far you'll go."

All the heroes were now awake and were in the common room. Tony walked in last but somehow already had a mug of coffee in his hands. Tony scanned over the room, looking for a certain Spiderling. He, however, didn't seem to be present.
"Where's Peter?"
As if on cue, Peter walked in. He stopped when he saw everyone looking at him. "Is this going to be a normal thing? Me walking in and everyone staring?"
"Sorry kiddo, but every time you walk in you seem to always have some sort of news for us." Steve smiled apologetically.
"And seeing that look on your face, I'm assuming you do have news for us." Clint said.
"Alright kid. Spill." Tony said as he took a sip of his coffee.
"Wait, first question. Good or bad news?" Sam asked.
"Uh... both?" Everyone looked at Peter with a confused look. Peter sighed and took out the broken shards of the stone from out of his hoodie pocket.
"Woah woah woah." Rhodey started.
"Where did you get those?" Bucky finished.
"Came to me. Last night by the dock."
"Came to you?" Natasha raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah."
"So, this is bad news? We have one of the stones, that means, Helix or whatever they're called, can't get it. Right?" Quill stated.
"Well, for the majority, that's true." Bruce started. The gears turning in his head. "Since you have the stone, they can't get it right?"
"Yeah, the stone will obey the wielder more than it's guardian." Peter confirmed.
"So that means once Hydra finds out Peter has the stone, they'll come after him." Tony said. Everyone took a sharp inhale.
"But this is still a good thing, right? I mean this buys us some time to figure out a plan. I mean aside from them coming after Peter, this is a good thing." Scott said.
"Regular Sized Man has a point. I mean how long do you think they'll find out that Peter has the stone." Rhodey pointed out.
Suddenly the ground shook. The hero's eyes widened.
"Uh... I think now." Sam said, unhelpfully. Bucky smacked him on the back of the head. "Ow!"
"Okay everyone! Suit up! Those we can get out there now, buy the rest of us sometime." Steve started shouting out commands. Then he turned to Peter. "And find a place to hide. Maybe get out of here. Don't let them get to you."
"What! No way am I going to run and leave you guys!" Peter objected.
"You're the one they're after. You need to leave. No arguments." Steve said sternly.
"But-"
"Peter." Steve and Peter stood their ground for about another minute.
Peter deflated. "Alright."
"Good." Steve's eyes softened. "I know this isn't something you want to do. But they can't get to you. We'll come find you as soon as we get them to retreat. Until then, get out of here and don't look back."
"Okay."
Steve nodded and straightened up. "Okay Avengers! Let's head out!"
Peter watched as they ran into the battle and joined the Guardians and the few Avengers that were already out there. Peter turned the other way and bolted. Leaving the battle behind him.

Sorry for the short chapter. School started for me and I didn't realize that I hadn't started writing this chapter. So this is a little rushed but it turned out okay. The voice has changed. If you noticed, it wasn't the voice speaking when it asked "Why do you still try?" the quotation changed. When the voice speaks its 'voice' but this was "voice". So who do you think is speaking?
Ah ha, I'm giving out too much.
Anyway Byeee!
