Chapter 46: Set Lose
"Oh god.""Mind telling us what the 'oh god' means?" Bucky called.
"Hey, Pete. How strong is your friends?" Sam asked.
Peter stopped and flipped onto a branch. "What do you mean?"
"I think it would be nice to know when they come into play."
"Sam, what are you seeing?" Natasha cut to the point.
"Ross is setting them lose." Tony answered.
"Isn't that a good thing then?" Quill asked.
Tony snorted. "It would be if it weren't the enemies releasing them. More specifically, it would be if the enemy isn't a maniac smartass."
"Tony's got a point. If Ross is releasing them, then he's probably mind controlled them." Steve stated.
"And since it's Hydra..." Wanda started.
"That's exactly what they did." Bucky finished.
"So, what do we do?" Clint asked.
"Each one of them is enhanced. Plus, the added animal parts." Peter started.
"By the way, weird experiment to do." Tony pointed out. "Why would they mash animal part to the list?"
"Really don't think it matters. It's Hydra." Sam said.
"No, no. He's right. They weren't meant to be the experiments for the stones. Originally, they, we, were trained to go on other missions. Ones that a normal human couldn't. Like survive in the extreme cold or breath under water." Peter explained. "My guess is that test subjects died and Hydra saw them as reliable variables."
"Wait, why?" Rhodey asked.
"Because their DNA had already mixed with the animal. Their DNA was already different, which meant experiments that might have killed humans-"
Tony cut Shuri off. "Might work with enhanced and mutants."
"And they were right." Bucky says grimly.
"Okay, so are we talking strong like Captain Star Spangled or what? What are we working with?"
"I wouldn't say as stong as Cap." Peter hesitated. "But uh, close."
"Well, shit. Anyone got a plan to knock them?" Tony asked no one in particular. "No? Great, even better."
"Just, knock them but don't kill. If anyone can think of anything, speak up." Steve stated. "Until then, we're in for a rough ride."

"Sir, are you sure about this?" A soldier asked.
"Yes, now on my signal. Release them." Ross ordered. The soldier shifted, visibly uncomfortable. Eyeing the stone guardians nervously. Ross stood straighter. "Now."
The soldier pressed a button and five were off in a blink of an eye. Ross kept a straight face as he watched them go. Observing and waiting. He turned and looked at the remaining one. Eyes glowing a bright orange.
"Your time will come soon. Don't you worry. I'm sure your bond brother will be delighted to see you."

Tony grunted as he flew through the forest. One of the stone guardians chasing him. It seemed no matter how hard he tried; he could shake the guy off. He used every trick in the book, both old and new, but the guy was still hot on his trail. Tony took a sharp left. He looked behind him and the guy was still following.
"How can this guy still follow me?" Tony asked into the comms.
"Is it Daniel? Cause that would explain a lot." Peter stated.
"How am I supposed to know who this guy is!? It's a guy with purple glowing ass eyes and eagle wings." Tony exclaimed and took sharp right.
"Oh yeah, that's Daniel. The eagle hybrid should be clear on how he can follow you so effectively." Peter answered way too calmly for people's liking.
"Dude, how are you not panicking?" Harley asked. "Doesn't seem like you."
"Gee, thanks." Peter said, sarcasm dripping from his voice. "But no, I'm panicking, it's just not showing." Peter wasn't lying. He was having an existential crisis at the moment but adrenaline was in his veins. Not the best combo really. Especially now, as he's fighting for his life.
'Can your life get any worse?'
"Don't jinx it."
'Oops, sorry.'
"You don't sound sorry."
"Man of Spiders! Who are you speaking with?" Thor's voice boomed through his ear.
Peter cringed. "No one... no one."
"Right, sure I- hey!" Tony yelled out. "Can someone get this guy off my track!?"
"Hold still." Clint said. He shot an arrow right in front of Daniel. The arrow exploded forcing him to turn a different direction. "You're welcome."
"I would say thank you but I asked for help five minutes ago." Tony stated.
Steve sighed and Natasha just rolled her eyes and smirked at Steve.
"We've been a team for how long? How are you not used to this shit?" Natasha teased.
"Gods, not you too." Steve groaned.
"What is that I hear?" Sam joined in. "Captain America saying 'gods' as in plural?"
"I hate all of you." Steve states.
"You don't mean that!" Tony called as he flew above them.
"Let's go." Steve started running off. Natasha huffed out a laugh but followed.
On the East side, Shuri tried shooting at one of the stone guardians that was circling them. She shot at a branch and it fell. The guardian avoided and then disappeared in the trees. Shuri looked around trying to find it. She looked behind her and saw the guardian flying straight towards T'Challa.
"Duck!"
T'Challa didn't need to be told twice as he dove to the ground. Shuri shot it. The guardian moved swiftly and flew straight up, away from view. Shuri raced over to her brother.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, which guardian is it?"
"Reality, I will never unsee those glowing red eyes." Shuri shivered.
"What? Can't handle a bit of the scary red eyes?" T'Challa teased.
"No, idiot! You be try looking into those eyes and start questioning reality." Shuri rolled her eyes.
"That can happen just from looking into the eyes?" Quill asked.
"Apparently. It's like the stone itself is in them." Shuri stated.
"Do you think this could link to the realities battle in that prophecy?" Clint asked.
"Maybe, just beware of the rest. We don't know if the others have the same effect." Steve warned.
Peter webbed a guy to a tree and then look up where he knew Ross was. Only five of the six came out, meaning one was still there. Peter's gut twisted. Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.
