You entered your apartment on Earth that you shared with Jonathan after a long day of work. After he became the president of the Federation, the two of you decided to settle on Earth and have a relatively calm lifestyle compared to what you were used to on the Enterprise. It was a nice change to be back on Earth with friends and family. Neither of you were sure of how long it would last, but you welcomed the change and did your best to find a new normal.
"Jon?" you called out as you kicked off your shoes.
You didn't hear a response, but you knew he was home—he didn't have any meetings this late in the day and his shoes were on the mat.
You took your jacket off, hanging it in the closet, and then made your way to Jon's office. You poked your head in, seeing him hunched over a PADD at his desk. You walked over and wrapped your arms around his shoulders. "Hey."
"Y/N?" he asked, not taking his eyes off the PADD. "You're home so early?"
You laughed lightly. "It isn't early, babe. It's nearly 1800 hours."
He frowned and turned his head to glance at you. "Is it? Guess I lost track of time."
You smiled and kissed his cheek. "What do you say you take a break and we can have some dinner?"
Jonathan shook his head. "I need to finish rereading this debriefing for tomorrow's meeting."
"I'm sure you've gone over it enough," you said. You ran your hands down his shoulders slowly.
He shrugged you off. "It's an important meeting, Y/N. I need to be prepared."
You huffed and folded your arms over your chest. "They're all important meetings, Jon."
He shook his head slightly. "That's what happens when an organization like the Federation is trying to get underway."
"Yeah, but you need to make time for yourself, Jon." You paused, then added, "And for me."
Jonathan turned in his chair and looked at you, expression softer than his tone had been a moment ago. "I'm sorry. I know I've been really busy lately, but I just really want this all to work out. It has to work out," he added the last part quietly after a pause.
"I know." You managed a small smile. "And I'm so proud of you for everything you've accomplished. It truly is amazing work you're doing. I just don't want you to get so caught up in it that it becomes your whole life. You need to set boundaries and limits. You need to make sure you don't lose yourself to the workload."
A tired smile spread on his face. "I appreciate your concern, but I've been overworking since long before we met."
You laughed. "Yeah, I suppose so. I still think you should try and take more breaks, though. Especially when I'm home. Not to be selfish, but I miss you."
Jonathan placed the PADD down on his desk and opened his arms. "I miss you, too."
You went into his arms, leaning your lower half on the edge of the chair. "I'm sorry if I ever nag you, I just want to make sure you don't work yourself to death."
His chest rumbled with a laugh. "Phlox would have a fit it I did that."
You smiled and pulled back. "How about this: I'll order us some dinner and you can go over the briefing until it gets here. Then, you're done. No more work until tomorrow. Deal?"
Jonathan smiled widely—eyes crinkled. He took your hand and gave it a small squeeze. "Deal."
