After getting thrown into the Delta Quadrant and having to accept the reality that you wouldn't be getting home for ages—if ever—you'd be a bit wary of Chakotay. Sure, he had been a Starfleet officer once, but he had thrown away his career to help a terrorist group—at least, that's how the Starfleet reports had put it. You'd respect his command, but you wouldn't be overly fond of him at the very beginning.

Your opinion about him quickly changed once you got to know him and once you understood more about the Maquis and why they had done what they did. Chakotay had explained to you why he had decided to join them, and you respected his decision to help defend his homeland—or what was left of it. You valued his command ethics and looked up to him. You would accept him as the first officer very quickly after that.

You two would become friends only a few months after being in the Delta Quadrant. Afterall, it's hard not to get to know people on a ship so small when they're the only people you have close contact with. You and Chakotay would discover some shared interests and would be eager to learn about each other's specialties as well as hobbies.

You would be having a rough time several months into your journey, so Chakotay would decide to introduce you to your animal guide. He'd guide you through the process and would help you along the way as much as he could. You'd find your animal guide with his help and would go to it often when you were feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

The friendship between you two would grow stronger as the months went by. You'd spend more time together off duty and would lean on each other for support whenever you needed it. Chakotay would always be willing to give you advice and comfort, and you to him. Your friendship would just come naturally to you both—it wouldn't be forced or feel awkward at any point. It was just comfortable.

People on board would start to speculate about your friendship with Chakotay. They'd wonder if there was something more going on between you two, which you'd both deny if anyone asked. But as time went on, you both realized that maybe there was something more than friendship blossoming between you two. You'd just be chatting one evening about anything and everything when one of you brought up the topic of the rumours going around about you two secretly dating. You'd both laugh it off, then as you both felt your hearts fluttering at the sound of the other's laughter, you'd wonder if they had been seeing something that you two had been blind to.

So you'd try dating. You'd be slow at first, just testing the waters in case it didn't work out—you wouldn't want to ruin your amazing friendship by diving in headfirst. Your romantic relationship, much like your friendship, would just come so naturally to the two of you. Chakotay would be one of the gentlest, most caring boyfriends anyone could ask for. He'd be so attentive whenever you were hurt or upset. He'd check up on you often, especially if he knew you were having a long day. He'd do lots of romantic gestures, like cooking dinner for you, bringing you to the holodeck for dates, bringing you flowers, and showering you with affection when you two were alone.

Being in the Delta Quadrant would be very hard at times, to say the least. But Chakotay would be your rock, and you his. The connection you two shared would be like nothing you'd ever felt before, and it would help centre you and keep you sane during the hectic journey you all had to endure.
