"Here we are, freshly replicated banana pancakes," you said, placing a plate in front of B'Elanna. "Topped with maple syrup and banana slices."
B'Elanna smiled up at you. "You really didn't have to do this."
"I wanted to," you replied, taking a seat next to her at the dining room table in your quarters. "You've been working so hard lately, and the holiday season is always tough when one's away from home. And, well, it doesn't get much more away from home than this."
Even though she had only celebrated a handful of Earth holidays before her dad left, you thought she could still do with some holiday cheer. She looked down at the plate, a smile spreading on her face. "It smells amazing."
"Oh! I almost forgot." You got up and went to the replicator. "Computer, two mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows."
Two steaming mugs appeared, and you took them both to the table.
B'Elanna raised her eyebrows. "Pancakes, syrup, hot chocolate, and marshmallows? Are you trying to give me a cavity?"
You laughed. "Come on, it's a treat! Hot chocolate goes with everything, trust me. Besides, it's festive."
She took a mug from you. "You know, the first time I had hot chocolate was with my cousins back on Earth." Her smiled faltered slightly. "My uncle always put lots of marshmallows in it."
You put your hand over hers. "Do you want more marshmallows?"
A short laugh left B'Elanna's mouth. "No, thanks. I think there's enough sugar here to last me a week."
You smiled and took a sip of your hot chocolate. You sighed with pleasure. "Mm. I haven't had hot chocolate in ages."
B'Elanna started to eat her pancakes, smiling as the rich flavour filled her mouth. "Thank you."
You nodded. "I'm glad you like them."
She looked up at you, a thoughtful expression on her face.
"What is it?" you prompted.
With a smile, she shook her head. "Just thinking about how, weirdly, this is one of the best holiday seasons I've had in a long time."
You smiled and placed your hand atop hers.
"It's been a while since I've felt such a strong sense of family," B'Elanna admitted. "With you and everyone on board. I just hate that it took being flung halfway across the galaxy to finally feel this way."
You laughed lightly. "I understand. I think a lot of us have felt the same way."
A smile spread on her face. "Thank you for everything.
You put your hand gently onto her bicep. You nodded slightly. "Come on, let's finish these pancakes and our hot chocolate and then we can watch an old Christmas film."
B'Elanna laughed. "Sounds good to me."
