"You could have died," T'Pol said sternly for the fifth time since leaving the planet. She'd lectured you in the shuttle all the way back to the Enterprise, and she was still lecturing you in the decontamination chamber.
You rolled your eyes as you applied gel to your arms. "But I didn't. Seriously, why are you so focused on that tiny aspect? The mission was a success, wasn't it? We found the crash site of an old Vulcan cruiser and recovered many artifacts."
"The fact that you could have died is not a tiny aspect," she replied. "And we completed our mission in spite of your reckless behaviour, not because of it."
You scoffed. "Oh, come on. My reckless behaviour saved countless artifacts! You said yourself a lot of what the ship was carrying is priceless!"
T'Pol shook her head. "Material goods are not worth risking your life over. You knew that chamber of the ship was unstable, and yet you chose to go in anyway. On top of that, you defied a direct order not to go to that part of the ship."
"I wanted to bring back those artifacts for you," you said. "I thought you would be happy to have the chance to study them."
"I am," she said more gently. "I appreciate your thoughtful gesture, but it was not necessary nor warranted."
You folded your arms over your chest and sat on the bench. You were getting tired of playing this game; the back and forth. Not just today, but virtually every time the two of you worked together. Time to get to the bottom of it. "I think you were just worried about me."
T'Pol put down the container of gel and rubbed her hands together. "As a member of the away team, you were under my watch. Your safety was my concern."
You shook your head. Not good enough. "No, it's more than that. You're not mad that I went to get the artifacts. You're scared. Scared that you almost lost me."
"I do not know what you are talking about."
You threw your hands in the air. "Please, I know. I see how you look at me, I hear the way you talk to me. Why can't you just admit you have feelings for me?"
T'Pol was quiet, looking off into the distance.
Your heart pounded in your ears. Why had you said that? You hadn't meant to say that. It had just slipped out. Though you suspected romantic feelings were the root of these arguments you'd been having, you shouldn't have said it like that.
"T'Pol—Commander. I didn't... I'm sorry. That was out of line." You fumbled with your hands in your lap and looked down. "Forget I said anything. I didn't mean to imply that—"
"That I am romantically interested in you," she finished for you.
You nodded, almost fearful of what she might say.
"Your implication would be accurate," she said quietly after a few moments.
Your eyes snapped back to her. "Really?"
With a nod, T'Pol said, "And to answer your question, I have not admitted as such because it is... difficult for me to express my feelings. Vulcans do not partake in romantic relationships the way you humans do. We do not have bold confessions of one's personal feelings. I did not know how to bring it up, nor did I wish to make you uncomfortable."
You opened and closed your mouth a few times, trying to figure out what the hell to say. T'Pol had feelings for you. Romantic feelings. Like you had for her.
Say something, you mentally chastised yourself.
T'Pol crouched in front of you. She placed her hands atop yours. "Y/N," she said gently.
You met her eyes and swallowed hard. "For the record, I have feelings for you, too."
You swore you saw a faint smile pull at T'Pol's lips.
"I had assumed as much when you brought this up," she replied.
You felt heat rush to your cheeks. "Oh. So... Um." You scratched the back of your neck. "What do we do now? You're my commanding officer, and there's whole different species issue, and I don't know what others would think—"
T'Pol cut you off by placing a hand onto your cheek gently. "Do you wish to pursue a romantic relationship with me?"
At her touch, your mind stilled. You stared into her beautiful brown eyes. "Yes," you whispered.
"Then that is what we will do," she said. "I do not care what others think. The only opinion I am concerned with is yours."
You smiled widely. "You'll have to teach me how to be so confident with your feelings."
"It is simply illogical to take the opinions of others into consideration when pursing a relationship," she said simply. "Should we choose to date, to use a human expression, that is our business. And as for your concern about me being your superior officer, I am more than capable of separating my romantic feelings from professional feelings."
You nodded slightly. "I may have to work on that, too."
"I can assist you," T'Pol offered.
You leaned your head into her touch. "Okay."
"May I kiss you?" she asked.
You grinned. You answered her by leaning down and pressing your lips to hers.
The kiss was soft and did not last long, but man was it amazing.
