I took a deep breath and focused on the tree, using this rare, unique ability to make it fall down.
Shadow bending, a rare bending that gets it power from the lack of light. The first Shadow benders was the Shadow Horse Bats. Not a lot of people knows about this bending, mostly because 1 in 100,000 has this ability.
Since it's so rare, I have no idea on how it works, or what it even is. All of this information that I have was based on this book 600 years ago. My parents didn't even know what it was, I had to be a secret, so I could never go to school or have friends. Until 2 years ago my mom got sick and died, a week after my dad left and never came back. So, for the past 2 years i've been living on my own, practicing my shadow bending to become stronger.
I swung my leg and a wave of darkness knocked a tree down, when it slammed into the ground I heard some screams. I thought I was the only one here.
I looked around at my surrounding area, and that's when I realized there was a small light source from where that tree landed. I mentally argued with myself, wondering if I should go over there. I groaned and took the chance to walk over at the light source. The closer I got to it I could see that it was a small hole in the hill, that's when I realized that there's teenagers in it.
The 6 teenagers looked at me, some with confused looks, some with neutral looks, and the one who was smiling caught my eye. I think he's the Avayar that everybody was talking about.
"Uh...hey." I slightly waved.
"Hello, who are you?" The girl with long brown hair said to me.
"Y/n, were you the ones who screamed?"
"That was me." The boy with brown hair pulled up into a pony tail said. The girl that had shorter brown hair was sitting next to him laughed. "I'm Suki and this is Sokka."
"What bender are you to knock that tree down?" The Avatar said.
"Oh um, a shadow bender. I know I know, that seems crazy. But it's a rare type of bending that only a selected few has." I rubbed the back of my neck.
"Shadow bender? I heard about them back at the Southern Air Temple." The boy said. "Oh I'm Aang, that's Katara, Toph, and the one who looks mad all the time is Zuko." He pointed to them.
"Nice to meet you guys."
"Nice to meet you." Katara smiled at me.
"So," Aang started off, "What are you doing out here alone?"
"It's a long story, sorry."
"No it's fine! I understand. You can sit down with us" Aang smiled.
"Oh, thanks."
The only spot that was open was beside of Aang, so I sat down beside of him. The heat of the fire was relaxing. I was always against fire because of the light, light means that my ability is weaker.
"What exactly is shadow bending?" Katara asked.
I told them the very basics, from the Shadow Horse Bats, the lion turtle island, it's weaknesses and strengths, and how my life is always in danger. I didn't tell them about my past life though, I'm not ready for that.
"Do you think you could use it to defeat the Firelord?" Zuko asked, crossing his arms.
"Fire and shadow bending doesn't exactly mix. Light can make me weaker." I rolled my eyes.
"Actually, I think there's a way for you to help me defeat him. Because think about it, I'm sure Ozai doesn't know anything about shadow benders. So if you tricked him you can surely defeat him with me." Aang said.
"Wait really? How?" I replied back.
"You could just trick yourself into thinking there's darkness, just put something to cover up your eyes." Aang added.
"How am I supposed to see?"
"Mood." Toph interrupted.
"Toph uses seismic sense to see. Shadow Horse bats uses echolocation to see. If you can create a noise, I'm sure it can bounce off of others and that's how you can see." Aang said proudly.
"That's not a bad idea, but how am I supposed to learn that?"
"We have time to teach you. Toph and I can teach you, and while you're practicing to being blind, I can practice fighting. So we could fight each other."
"That's not a bad idea." I laughed. "So when can I start?"
"Tomorrow morning." Aang said.
~~
I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed than ever, I met some great friends and for once I'm not scared for my life.
"Oh Y/n, here's a cloth to cover up your eyes." Aang gave me a fire nation headband thing. "Turn around." He said.
I did without a question, and felt him put the cloth over my eyes, completely blocking out my vision.
"Since it's broad day light I don't think I can do this." I said.
"Don't worry, I'm here to help you." Aang said to me, putting his hand on my shoulder.
"Alright Twinkle Toes, it's my turn to teach Shadow over here." Toph said.
I couldn't see a thing, it was pitch black for me.
"Please don't throw rocks at me, I can't see." I begged.
"Me either. Now try focusing on using your hearing and echolocation. Try to create a hum or something, and use the sound waves to help you see."
I shut out the noises and focused on using this echolocation. I started humming a tone, but nothing bounced back.
"Toph I don't think this is working."
"You just started." I couldn't see her, but I could tell that she was rolling her eyes.
I tried it again, but nothing happened. "This is stupid!"
"It's okay Y/n, just try focusing on sensing the echolocation. I'm proud of you no matter what." Aang said.
That instantly made me light up. For some reason, Aang gives me so much happiness, and I'm just so happy to be here with him.
I got into a relaxing stance, and tried it again, using a different tone. I could feel the noise bounce off and coming back to me, I could see everything. Well not exactly, it's still black but I could see white figures, and white lines bouncing off.
"I can see you guys." I whispered. Even whispering I could see everything.
"You did it!" Aang yelled, pulling me into a hug. I was startled but hugged back, pulling away since Toph was yelling at me.
"Now get ready for a small rock." She said.
I quickly started humming and could feel the sound wave bouncing off of objects. I saw a rock coming towards me, I used shadow bending to protect myself, since it's day light Im still weak, but tricking my body into thinking that it's dark helped a little bit.
"Did I do it right?" I took off the headband, squinting since the light hurt my eyes.
"You used the shadow to protect yourself." Aang smiled at me again. "Now let's fight each other, being blind folded." He pulled out another cloth for his eyes.
"Bring it on."
