She kept it, all this time.
I really didn't want to take off my helmet. She'd probably hit me, and boy, she hits hard.
Slowly, I started to reach my hands to the helmet, but she beat me to it. Her hands slowly pulled the helmet off my head. When she saw my face, the helmet clattered to the ground.
Astrid P.O.V
My hands were trembling slightly as I smacked his hand away and put my fingers on each side of his helmet.
I lifted the mask off slowly and as it came off, inhaled sharply. Same messy auburn hair, same emerald green eyes , same scar under his lip. It couldn't be. My hands suddenly became slippery and the helmet slid from my grasp. He wasn't, he couldn't, he can't...
Commander P.O.V
She stepped back slowly, eyes wide open. What was wrong? Her breathing became shallow and she stepped further back. I stepped closer, she went back.
"Ghost." She was trembling furiously. "Hiccup?" she had gone as far back as the cave would allow her.
I took her wrists in my hands and spoke softly, "What's wrong?"
"Ghost...hiccup...you...how..."
"I'm not a ghost, just a person, like everyone else."
Her hand reached out and touched my face. "You... You're alive..."
"Yes, I'm alive. Miss me?" I smiled.
She launched forward and buried her face in my chest, wrapping her arms around me. "You're alive..."
She pulled one arm out, and with her face still buried in my chest, she hit me with lackluster punches on my shoulder, as if she hadn't enough energy. "Why did you leave me?"
Her words took me by surprise. "Astrid, I never belonged on Berk... I couldn't even stand next to another Viking without being teased for my size or muscle or something. I was a fishbone among Vikings..."
She pulled away and I could see the tears dripping down her face. "please don't leave me again."
I wiped the tears from her face with my thumbs. "What made you miss me so much?"
"Hiccup, I missed you! I never hated you! I was wrong, I see that now. I'm sorry! Just, please don't hate me..."
"Why on earth would I hate you Astrid? I could never hate you. I just, don't worry..."
She sat on the ground and said, "Why didn't you come back after the dragon had taken you?"
"I told you Astrid, I don't belong on Berk, we were going to leave during the fight anyway."
"It's good to have you back though." She whispered.
Astrid P.O.V
I looked at Hiccup again. He had changed so much. I used to be taller than him, now he looked like what was 6 foot 1, and he was, I say this because it's true, strikingly hot. His lopsided grin made my head spin and I didn't know why.
"So... Hiccup's back!" I said.
"No he's not..." Hiccup mumbled, avoiding my eyes.
"What are you talking about...?" I whispered nervously.
"Hiccup... was a nothing, no one cared about him. He was a failure, never enough. I'm the Commander now. Being the Commander, people, they care." He went to leave the cave but I grabbed his shoulder and spun him back around.
"Hiccup... you were not a failure, you just, didn't fit in... I guess I was being stupid when I told you that we shouldn't be friends. Those years we spent searching for trolls and falling in wells, they were the best years of my life...! To me you're still Hiccup, just, changed a bit. Wait, actually, a lot. But that doesn't change the fact that you are still amazing."
His face softened and he gave a defeated smile. "Fine, you win. Again."
