After making your way outside the walls you couldn't help but take a look around. Aboveground, no matter how long you'd been here, always excited you. Maybe it was because you vividly remembered your time in the underground, actually that was probably it.
Your attention was returned to the group in front of you when shouts of a titan being spotted was heard.
Hange made a comment about wanting to know what was in the titans stomach as the spotters engaged in combat to kill the titan or get it off of you all's trail so it wouldn't later mess up the formation.
After that you all were clear of the town and out into the plains. Everything was fine, fine until there was a black smoke signal: an abnormal. A few minutes later a yellow smoke signal: a signal to void the mission. In response a green flare was sent up.
You furrow your eyebrows as you see the green smoke appear, how does the mission status go from yellow to green?
"Smoke signals. Green. Oluo, pass it on." Levi commands if he's concerned about the way the mission's going he doesn't show it.
"With pleasure, sir." Oluo takes out a flare and fires off a green smoke signal as well.
Your stomach churns uneasily, something's off.
"Reporting, sir!" Your head turns to the left of you, where a messenger rides up next to the squad. "An oral message! It appears the right-wing spotters have been wiped out! The early warning network is compromised. One of you will need to relay the message down the line!"
Levi doesn't hesitate and turns towards Petra "You heard the man, Petra. Go on."
"Sir!" Petra immediately breaks away from your formation and guides her horse in the opposite direction that the other man came from.
Your stomach churns when your struck with a realization that's where Jean was stationed.
However that train of thought is halted when black smoke curls into the air.
"Black smoke?" Eren questions as his head turns in the direction the smoke came from "An abnormal!"
"Y/N, fire the signal."
You do as Levi commands as you swiftly and wordlessly take out a black smoke signal and attach it to the gun.
"This is a disgrace. Lotta good this formation does if the bastards can bore in that deeply." Levi tsk.
Raising your right hand into the air and clasping your left over your ear you fire into the sky. You grimace as you watch a black streak sore into the sky above you, It's so close. Too close.
