Non-Verbal Magic

"Now..." Snape set off again around the other side of the classroom towards his desk, and again, the class watched him as he walked, "you are, with the exception of Miss Black," the students' eyes shifted to Mikayla for a couple of seconds, before returning to Snape, "complete novices in the use of non-verbal spells. What is the advantage of a non-verbal spell?" Mikayla prevented herself from raising her hand to prevent receiving anymore unwanted attention.

Hermione's hand shot into the air next to the blonde, Snape took his time scanning the classroom in hopes of calling on anyone but Hermione, "very well- Miss Granger?" Hermione spoke her answer confidently, "an answer copied almost word for word from The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 6." Snape spoke dismissively waving his hand, "but correct in essentials. Yes, those who progress to using magic without shouting incantations gain an element of surprise in their spell-casting. Not all wizards can do this, of course, it is a question of concentration and mind power which some," Mikayla notices Snape's gaze fall on Harry, "lack." Harry stood his ground, glaring back at Snape not even batting a eyelash at his attempt of insulting him.

"You will now divide into pairs. One partner will attempt to jinx the other without speaking. The other will attempt to repel the jinx in equal silence. Carry on." Mikayla went to pair up with Hermione but Snape prevented her from doing so, "Granger go with Longbottom, Black I'd like you to pair up with Mr Malfoy." Mikayla inwardly groaned as Snape escorted her to Malfoy, "Malfoy attempt to Jinx Black." Mikayla glared at Malfoy. A reasonable amount of cheating occurred in the class, where people were whispering the spells, and for the first ten minutes Mikayla was the only one following the instructions. Hermione was the next to achieve a non-verbal spell and should've earned some points for Gryffindor by any credible teachers.

Malfoy was clearly grumpy that Hermione perfected the spell before him, Mikayla felt a little bad asking Malfoy what Jinx he was trying, "okay, clear your mind and take a deep breath." Malfoy reluctantly followed her advice, as did some people in close range of the pair, "now, imagine the spell working, imagine I'm hanging upside down by my ankles, and once it's a clear picture then think the incantation, and I won't try to block it, so you know if you did it or not." Malfoy took a couple of seconds to follow Mikayla's instructions, in the meantime Snape made his way over to the pair.

"Eek!" Mikayla squeals as she suddenly hanging upside down, she laughs lightly before doing the counter curse and placing herself back on her feet. "Impressive work, Malfoy." Malfoy smirks at the praise he receives, as Snape makes his way over to Harry. "Now, that you know that you can do it, it'll be easier." Malfoy nods, getting ready to do it again, this time Mikayla blocks it and it hit Pansy, Mikayla pretends to be apologetic for causing the spell to hit her.

Mikayla performs the counter curse before she hears Harry yell the Shielding Charm. The charm was so strong, it knocked Snape back and caused him to fall against a desk, "oh for the love of Godric," Mikayla groans, making her way through the crowd as Snape asks, "do you remember me telling you we are practising non-verbal spells, Potter?" A scowl etched on Snape's face as Harry stiffly says "yes," Snape corrected him, implying that Harry should've said yes sir. "There's no need to call me "sir", Professor." Several people gasped, where Mikayla was trying her best not to laugh at Harry's sudden snide remark, she was shaking holding in her giggles. Snape gave Harry a Saturday detention for his behaviour.

"That was brilliant, Harry!" Ron exclaims once the foursome were far away from Snape, on their way to the Great Hall for their break. "You really shouldn't have said it," said Hermione, frowning at Ron for praising Harry's outburst, "you have to admit Hermione, it was quite funny." Mikayla chuckled which made Hermione frown even more as Harry and Ron cheered in agreement. "What made you say it out loud?" Hermione continued her interrogation, "he tried to Jinx me, in case you didn't notice. I had enough of that during Occlumency lessons! Why doesn't he use another guinea pig for a change? What's Dumbledore playing at, anyways, letting him teach Defence?"

Mikayla interrupted an argumentative Harry, "maybe he's testing Snape. He's given Snape his dream job and maybe he's trying to double check what side Snape is on." The group all look at Mikayla to continue, "tell me I'm not the only one to notice that Snape calls Voldemort, The Dark Lord, that's what his Death Eaters call him, and they worship him. Right now, I'm worried he's playing both sides of the war and maybe Dumbledore shares my doubts." Ron, Harry and Hermione were stunned that Mikayla had such a theory from how Snape addresses Voldemort, Ron showed a hint of agreement before Harry steam rolled on.

"Did you hear him talking about the Dark Arts? He loves them! All that unfixed, indestructible stuff-" Hermione interrupted Harry, stating that she thought Snape sounded quite like him. "Like me?" Harry questioned repulsed by the insinuation of him and Snape being alike. "Yes, when you were telling us what it's like to face Voldemort." Mikayla thought about Hermione's point, remembering what Harry said, "oh yeah, you said it wasn't just memorising a bunch of spells. You said it was just you and your brains and your guts." Mikayla reminded them, and Hermione took over to make her point, "well, wasn't that exactly what Snape was saying? That it really comes down to being brave and quick-thinking?" Harry fell silent, not bothering to argue as he was thrown off that the girls memorise his words as if it was a book.

"Harry! Hey, Harry!" The foursome spun around to see Jack Sloper, one of the Beaters that replaced the Weasley twins last year, he was running towards them with two rolls of parchment in his hand. "For you," he panted passing the first roll to Mikayla "and you," and the second to Harry, "Listen, I heard you're the new Captain. When're you holding trials?" Harry smiled politely at Sloper, "We're not sure yet. We'll let you know." Sloper's brows furrow at Harry's words, "we?" Mikayla smiled at him as Harry informed that she's his co-Captain. "I've never heard that we would have co-Captain's this year." Sloper had a sudden bluntness in his tone, which made Mikayla feel slightly uncomfortable. "Yes, well McGonagall agreed that it would be better to have two Captains since I'm a bit accident prone." Harry admits, making Sloper nod in agreement, "it definitely won't be this weekend." Mikayla informed Sloper before the pair sprinted off to catch up with Ron and Hermione, who left them with Sloper.

Dear Mikayla, I would like to request your presence this Saturday. Kindly come along to my office at eight p.m with Harry. I hope you are enjoying your first day back at school and congratulations on your co-captainship of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Yours sincerely, Albus Dumbledore P.S. I enjoy Acid Pops.

"He enjoys Acid Pops?" Ron questioned in confusion of the relevance of the statement, "it's the password to get past the gargoyle outside his study," Harry informed him in a low voice to prevent anyone from overhearing him. "Ha! Snape's not going to be pleased... I won't be able to do his detention!" Harry reads Mikayla's letter, "what does he want you for?" Mikayla shrugged, considering using her abilities to understand further, "wait until you're back in the common room." Hermione told her, clearly knowing what was running through her head.

The foursome spent their whole break speculating on what Dumbledore would teach Harry. Ron thought it most likely to be spectacular jinxes and hexes of the type the Death Eaters would not know. Hermione pointed out that his theory is illegal and believed that it might be advanced defensive spells that Dumbledore will be teaching Harry. Mikayla didn't pitch in her guess, she was confused as why Dumbledore has also summoned her, that she was lost in her thoughts.
