A First

I was woken the next morning by Tyler shaking me almost violently.

“Oh my god, Tyler, get the hell off of me!” I half yelled. He laughed and shook his head.

“You need to get up. I tried to wake you up twice already. Brea will be here soon and you need to get dressed. I laid some clothes out for you. Go get a shower. I’ll wait downstairs for you. Please don’t make me come back up here,” he asked nicely. I reluctantly got out of bed and in the shower. I put my hair in a messy bun and put the clothes on Tyler laid out and walked to the kitchen. I held my hand up at Tyler when I walked by him in the living room. I grabbed a bagel and some juice and sat on the couch.

“Just give me a few minutes and I will be sociable,” I pleaded. He nodded and we sat in silence while I ate my breakfast. I loved my brother, but that was no way to wake someone up. I finished my bagel and went to put my cup in the sink. Someone outside honked a horn and I figured it was Brea. I walked back in the living room and Tyler motioned for me to hurry up. I jogged over to the door and we left. Brea stopped at Starbuck first, which I was glad for. We grabbed a table outside and I looked from Brea to Tyler. “So, what is the point of this outing?” I asked.

“Well, Zayn and I have been talking and when he figured out that you never celebrate Valentine’s, well, he didn’t like that idea, so he asked if we would help ‘prepare’ you for a proper celebration,” Tyler giggled. I rolled my eyes.

“I don’t see the point in it, at all, and I don’t see what the big fuss is about,” I said looking between the two.

“Jess, trust us. If it’s done right, it can leave you feeling the best you have ever felt,” Brea said smiling. I just rolled my eyes and looked at Tyler.

“I know you have something else to say.”

“Yea, I do, you have this amazing person that wants to share this with you but yet you sit here like a rock not wanting to do anything. He loves you and this is one of the ways that couples do that. It’s one of the biggest ways that couples do that, actually. So, here’s what’s going to happen. You are going to change your attitude and start smiling and get into this. We are going to go shopping and you are going to find him a present. When we get home, you are going to get dressed. Brea and I will help you if you want us to. And after you get ready, we are going to take you to meet him somewhere. We’re not going to tell you where, that’s why we offered to help you get ready. You will like this, I promise. Now, smile and be happy. You’re doing this for him, to make him happy. Just remember that, okay?” he told me, getting a little mad in the process. I plastered a smile on my face after glaring at Tyler. I never liked when he got mad at me. We went to store after store and I couldn’t find anything that I wanted to give him.

“Ty, I’m not seeing anything.”

“It’s alright, we’ll find something. That’s why we came out so early” he smiled. We kept walking, this store, that store, and still nothing. We were walking along the sidewalk when I saw something out of the corner of my eye in a window. I grabbed Tyler’s shoulder and he stopped. “What? Did you see something?” I nodded yes.

“Let’s go in here,” I said. It was a jewelry store. I didn’t know if he wore a lot of jewelry but what I saw seemed almost perfect. We walked in the store and I asked the clerk to see the three necklaces in the window.

He brought them over to us and laid each one out, letting us pick them up and look at them.

“What do you think, Ty?” I asked holding up one of the necklaces. He was looking between the three.

“They are all nice,” he said. I looked at Brea and she pointed at one of the necklaces.
