It was a typical hot day. The streets were busy, people were walking through the sidewalks. Everyone seemed to mind their own businesses.
The sun glared down the streets. Some unfamiliar faces were meeting Can's eyes. He was walking fast, beads of sweat falling down the side of his neck, making his way through the crowds. Cars were passing by like a blur.
He stopped at a pedestrian, waiting for the traffic lights to turn green. He stared blankly at the red lights coming from the traffic light. The other end of the street was packed with people waiting for the green light just like him, some were alone, there were groups of students, couples, friends, families. They all had a different look on their faces. Some were smiling, some were laughing, some had their heads down their phone, some just stared ahead.
His gaze stayed a little longer at one particular man with his head and shoulders down, looking like he was carrying the problem of the whole world behind his back.
"What a sad sight," he whispered to himself.
A silhouette of a man suddenly flashed in his mind then disappeared just as fast as it appeared.
Can turned his head when he heard a gibberish sound in front of him then saw a baby reaching a hand to him, he figured that it was a girl. He couldn't help but smile and held the baby's cute little hands while making faces.
The baby gave out a laugh, her eyes glowing with innocence. The woman holding the baby turned her head to glance over him, Can guessed she was the baby's mom. She looked young but there was an obvious resemblance on her face and the baby. She smiled at him briefly and looked back ahead.
The traffic light turned green and everybody started walking. He let go of the baby's hand and made his way through the other side of the street, avoiding bumping into someone. His one hand holding a clear plastic envelope with his resume and other documents.
When he reached the sidewalk, he paused for a while, looking left and right, wondering which direction he would go. He decided to walk to his left. He looked down at the envelope in his hand and heaved a sigh. He felt like he had been walking a thousand miles, the soles of his feet were already hurting.
He had been wandering around the city for the past four hours, hopping from one establishment to another to ask if they were hiring. But it seemed like he had ran out of his luck today because he hadn't found one just yet, it was either there was no job vacancy or he was under-qualified.
It was frustrating him already, thinking about why some store owners needed to put college graduate in their qualifications for hiring. It wasn't like he wouldn't be competitive enough for the job he was applying for just because he didn't finish his degree. They should look for skills, not a diploma, there were other college graduates out there who lacked skills, for fuck's sake.
Not that he was generalizing, but those store owners should really change their thoughts about people with no degree, if only they gave him a chance, they would see just how hardworking he was. He might even bring luck to their stores, he joked to himself. Not that he was some sort of a lucky charm.
