The week was almost ending, relieving Jane who was already done with school. She was finishing her day with music class. She wondered why this classroom was underneath, but she liked the atmosphere. And there were lots of music instruments. She sat near the door, at the back of the room, as usual. There was a boy next to her that she had already seen in some classes. He didn't talk to her yet, but she was sure he would, that was what everybody had done this week.
- "Already bored?" he said.
- "I'm always bored," Jane answered.
- "Yeah, I understand. High School is boring, but the good thing with this one is that they allow you to take your driver's test."
- "...Really? How can I do that?"
- "You need to take some hours with an instructor. Then he will tell you when you can take it."
- "Did you take yours?"
- "Not yet. I still have a few hours."
Jane nodded.
- "Where do I take hours with an instructor?"
- "Ask the secretary. She will give you all the information you need."
- "Okay cool."
- "I'm Troy, by the way."
- "Cool," she frowned.
- "You don't like people, am I wrong?" he smiled.
- "People don't like me either."
- "I'm sure that's not true. You seem cool."
- "I am."
Troy chuckled which made her frown more. She was sure he was going to talk to her. She didn't know why everyone felt the urge to talk to her, she didn't ask them anything! And then they were all wondering why she was mean! They couldn't understand that she wanted to be alone!? Anyway, at least Troy seemed cool. But she hoped he wouldn't be clingy.
- "Do you play any instruments?" he asked.
- "I used to play the guitar."
- "Really? That's cool. Why did you stop?"
- "I sold it."
- "Oh...well, Ms. Jenkins always allow us to come here when we have a break, like that you can play the guitar when you want. I play the drums and the piano."
- "Okay."
The boy understood that the girl didn't want to talk. Other teens arrived, and Jane recognized the two redheads. She had an angry frown in their direction which made them frown too. Max wondered what she did to her to have such a behavior toward her. They ignored her and sat at the opposite of the classroom.
- "And you wanted to be friend with that!?" Max snapped.
- "I...I'm sure she is not that bad," Bev answered.
- "You're kidding!? She is literally wishing our death!"
Beverly chuckled, knowing Max was exaggerating. Or not. When Bev turned to look at Jane, the brunette was literally killing her with her eyes. A chubby brown-skinned woman with black short curly hair entered the room with a warm smile.
- "Hi everyone. I see that we have a new student here. I'm Ms. Jenkins, your music teacher."
Jane looked at the woman with sheepish eyes and nodded.
- "You are...(looks at the list on her desk) Jane Brown. Am I right?"
- "Yes," Jane shyly answered.
- "I saw that you wrote on your inscription that you play the guitar and sing, is it right?"
- "Yeah, kinda."
- "I hope we'll have the chance to hear you."
- "I hope not."
- "Oh, why?" Ms. Jenkins answered with a light disappointed tone.
- "I haven't sung for a while. I probably lost my voice."
- "I guess there is only one way to know."
Jane's face paled immediately.
- "Oh no, not today, don't worry," the woman reassured. "I'm happy to have you in my class. I hope you'll enjoy it."
- "Thanks."
Jane was glad the teacher didn't force her to sing in front of everyone. She didn't want them to mock her, she wanted them to fear her, like that they would leave her alone.
After the class, Jane went to the secretary before finally leaving the school. She lighted her cigarette, took a long puff, and felt like if she was breathing again. Now that she had accumulated all her anger, she needed a way to evacuate. She took the bus and stopped at the bar-club "The Dirty Men". It was still early, but she knew that some girls were already working. It was Friday, so some men were finishing early and coming here before going back to their homes. She didn't use the front door, preferring entering in the backstage. All the girls were getting ready, some to go on the scene, some to be sexy waitresses, and the others to satisfy some clients.
- "Damn, Jane. The heat increases every time you enter a place!" a girl said with a look full of lust.
- "It should be illegal to be so hot," another added.
Jane gave quick looks to the girls changing, having dirty thoughts, but she got cut by a girl punching her shoulder.
- "But why?" Jane frowned, rubbing her shoulder.
- "What are you doing here!?" Mallory angrily asked.
- "I'm here for Loren!"
- "Why!?"
- "Pff, come on! You know why!"
- "You're too young to be here!"
- "Are you kidding!? You're only one year older than me and you work here! Can you give me a break!? You're not my mom, and I wanna see Loren!"
A blonde girl approached the two girls and wrapped her arms around Jane's waist.
- "I'm here, relax," Loren smiled. "You're all tensed. I'll take care of you."
- "You don't work?" Jane asked.
- "No. Not now. I've two hours free. You stay all night?"
- "I've nothing planned for tomorrow."
- "Cool," Loren smirked.
- "Does Cassandra know?" Mallory asked.
- "Why do you care!?" Jane replied.
- "I don't know. Maybe because she is worried every day for you!"
Jane rolled her eyes.
- "I wish someone was worried for me like her."
- "Then, go back to your father, I'm sure he wonders where his punching-ball is gone!"
Mallory had enough. Without thinking, she slapped Jane, wanting her to stop acting like that. Jane felt the anger taking control of her body. She firmly grabbed Mallory by her collar and brutally blocked her against the wall. Mallory knew that Jane wouldn't hurt her, even if sometimes she was thinking otherwise. Especially now. Her eyes were bulging, her face was red, and her nostrils were dilated. She was sure there was some smoke going out of them. By luck, Loren quickly intervened, calming down the angry girl.
- "Come on. Let's go before I don't have time anymore."
Jane slowly opened her hand and freed her friend. None of the girls talked. Loren grabbed Jane's hand and forced her to follow her to her bedroom. Now, Jane had only one thing in her mind.
