This marvellous story opens with our female protagonist, Alexandra Davis-Myeong waking up from a three month long coma and a severe amnesia that continues its path.
All old standards have fallen down, there are no religions, no races and no ethnicities just six hundred million grounders and two hundred million citizens of the sky in the isolated city state of a ruined Earth. The eight hundred million humans are governed by a High Council of Regents. Six in total - Marcus Kalengar, Noel Kanisorto, Josephine Lanis, Vaughn Scio, Regent Hayashi, August Welks. They all maintain peace between the Grounders and the Skyworld with a righteous undefiable power. The six hundred million Grounders all wear Tags, a device emitting a sharp blue light installed at the nape of their neck by the High Council to monitor their everyday movements and the Tag allowed them certain privileges of the Skyworld.
Alexandra is a young exemplary woman of 29 years as of September 3rd, 2586, the day she wakes up on the 999th floor of Arleon Tower, reportedly her and Vaughn Scios home. Vaughn Scio, the regent and one of the six people ruling the State. He calls her Sasha, the Russian endearment of Alexandra, a beseeching nickname given to her by Vaughn. She gets to know from the network that she is the Senior Analyst at the Department of CyberSecurity and she has essential advancement in State security work.
Her father being Eugene Myeong and her mother Clara Davis both deceased. She has no contact with her grandparents. She does happens to have a best friend named, Harriet Louman, a State Attorney for Sector 12.
She has been told by Vaughn that her current condition happened because she was caught in an explosion at the 42 Eastern midground loading docks of Sector 19 and a transport accident. She gets the full details of her accidents in small amounts from Vaughn, Harriet and the network.
Though an amnesiac, Alex still remembered the city like she has memorized the map. Everything personal to her was gone from her brain. She knew that the kind of amnesia she was suffering from was not an accidental trauma and she knew this because she was familiar with the physiology of brain. Alex didn't trust Vaughn atleast not completely and was wary of all his actions and lifestyle routine. Although her instinct said no her logic commanded her to exercise caution.
Alex defined Vaughn as the man-made god but Vaughn Scio, the supposedly cold-hearted brilliant Regent, did not seem anything like his description if his soft handling of her was anything to go by.
Vaughn loved Sasha the moment he saw her but somehow that soft, gentle love turned into the harsh, possessive love, dark but still somehow love nonetheless. He saw how his Sasha could go to any length, endure infinite amount of pain to save Haneul and that drove him over the edge and transformed him into a man who stole away Sasha's smile, a true Regent to the core who went emotionless.
He was pained seeing Sasha go through physiological terror and he couldn't do anything, a helpless man bound by the reins of the High Council. He protected her as long as he could but her crime was of a too high degree to just let go by subjecting her to low level punishments reserved for criminals. He was the son of a Grounder and agreed that the Astrid System was too cruel but it was the only way peace could be maintained between the Grounders and the Skyworld. Also he knew that his alone vote would never be counted in the High Council for the removal of the System of Astrid tree.
