REVIEW –

Eden Henley, an illegitimate child born out of wedlock, a product of attraction. She had no contact with her mother or father whatsoever. She lived and grew up with her Uncle Adam Marks however it was not a merry way of living.

Dealing with her uncle's drunken stupors became a norm for Eden until one day he came home in his usual drunken haze mocking her boasting that he has arranged some rich man Stephan Adelwood to marry her. She passed it as faux new for it was too heavenly to be true. But the next morning when the same enchanting words fell from her uncles mouth, albeit less generously for they were combined with the regular taunts and insults.

Eden was simply stunned with the wonderful news not actually believing it until Lord Henry Adelwood were at her house to confirm the news. She fell in love with Lord Stephan Richard Adelwood the moment his father graced Eden with a portrait of his handsome son. Eden thought of Lord Stephan as a beautiful man who has so kindly agreed to wed her without knowing who she was, who had not even demanded any dowry.

Eden did care for her uncle even when all he bestowed upon her were cruel remarks and excruciating bruises. She was certain that the Lord will grant her a heavenly life replacing all memories of her measly living till now, for he was a good man, a beautiful man. And maybe he is but under a dense layer of reservations.

Lord Stephan Richard Adelwood, our male protagonist, an extremely intelligent man. He was a great landlord, a remarkable implementor. He was a man who was respected and idolised by all who surrounds him. Lord Stephan's father arranged his marriage to a poor girl named Eden Henley and being the dutiful son he assented to his fathers wishes albeit begrudgingly but nonetheless assenting to the union of him and Eden Henley.

He hated her the moment her ugly face graced his eyes, walking down the aisle towards him. Perhaps he was presumptuous, perhaps he was reserved, perhaps his spiteful actions were inhuman, perhaps his actions might be his biggest grief in the future but he was resolute on telling Eden his true feelings concerning her.

Haply in the subsequent months, he might come to love Eden but for now hatred was all that was festering in his heart.

The author has written quite the winsome story and one of the best ones I have ever read in Historical Fiction. The characters were absolutely aesthetic and built quite thoughtfully. I love how each one of the characters no matter having a big or a small role they represented something unique. No likeness in any characters. Magpie/ Maggie/ Margaret showed a girl whose ground were her fantasies, Eden showed a girl who has had too much hardship in her life making her turn out to be a pragmatic woman. Lord Stephan represented a man who realised his wrongs and the set on the path of redemption. Mr. Andreas Edwin showed that deceitful faces are sometimes hidden behind lovely gestures and noble manners. Mr. Robert Penfield represented a gentleman truly in love but who was robbed of that love in a very short period of time.

The plot and themes of the book were good, seemed well planned out. The writing was immaculate and left me in awe after every chapter. Some things were worded so beautifully that it convinced me to change my thoughts. And the setting of the historical era was well done. It was abundantly clear that the author is very knowledgeable given the accurate description of things back in the historical era. Definitely worth the read.
