"You have to run." Iida's body trembled, "I can't watch this."
It was all his fault. If he'd just listened to Kija, she wouldn't be fighting here, risking her life so he and his other classmates wouldn't have to fight. His classmates, who'd come to save him. He didn't deserve this.
Why did he make Midoriya bring him back? Why did he let Kija fight alone? Why did he go against everything everyone was telling him just because he was so, so selfish?
Todoroki's voice sounded over the battle, his fire and ice acting as a second barrier while Kija kept Stain at bay.
"You wanna make your brother proud?" Todoroki yelled, Stain swiped his blade again, Kija jumped over and slashed her own makeshift blade at him, "Then stand up and be Ingenium!"
Stains eyes glowed red as he tackled Kija to the ground, she warped away, only for him to slash at her again as she appeared above him. Whipping her Quirk to slash at the Hero Killer without an ounce of wasted movement. It skid by him, acting as a whip like sword to drive the killer back.
That weapon was a frightening creation, something halfway tangible and non-existent. It seemed to treat the laws of physics as optional, discarding them to jerk upwards and turn around to chase after Stain as Kija so pleased. Fully under her control.
"Become the hero he wanted you to be!" Todoroki let out a burst of flames, forcing Stain back again. Midoriya shot off and kicked him in the stomach, launching the villain away and getting pulled back behind Kija as she put herself between them again. The sword whip curling around her body as though sentient.
Iida watched as Kija spoke, her voice sounded as cold as the knife in Iida's arm, "You're only making things harder, leave."
She warped again, slashing at Stain with her Quirk.
Iida watched as Kija continued to hold Stain back, being thrown to the ground, punched, kicked, and slashed at. Watching made tears run down Iida's face. Kija got up every time, she dealt as many blows to Stain as he did to her, the two were matched. This was a battle Kija could win on her own, the only thing holding her back was them.
No, it was him.
Iida was the reason they were here. He was the reason Midoriya was staying back and waiting for Kija to ask for help, why Todoroki was resigned to protect Iida. He was the reason Kija kept warping the blood she shed from Stain's attacks behind them, he was the reason she had to keep fighting, he was the reason she'd become merciless.
Can I call myself a hero? My friends are protecting me. They're bleeding for me.
Stains words rung in his ears.
Shouldn't you be worried about saving that guy?
Kija shot underneath one of Stain's slashes, uppercutting him and wrapping the long, thin tendril of mist around his head. She pulled, hard.
It would've cracked Stain's skull had he hit concrete.
"Don't! He'll die!" Midoriya's words froze Kija, and for a moment, as though a switch had been flipped, Iida swore he saw blue flicker in Kija's portals. Immediately, Kija unwrapped the tendril and backed up, suddenly more focused on defense as opposed to attacking. Guilt cut through Iida.
Stain, The Hero Killer. I took my brother's name so that I could teach this villain a lesson. But I was so consumed with revenge, that I forgot about what really mattered. I was too focused on myself to help anyone else.
He closed his blurry eyes, frustrated with himself.
You wanna be a hero, too, Tenya?
Yes! Like you! A cool one!
