So...Amajiki knew not to mess with Kija when she was in a bad mood, but did it count if he was trying to help her not be in a bad mood?
Kija stared back at Amajiki, her eyes on him as he held out his lunchbox, "Are you sure?"
He nodded, "I always pack extra, so don't worry."
Kija frowned at the food, "You aren't doing this to just pacify me, are you?"
Amajiki jolted, "What?! N—no! I never...I wouldn't do that. I thought you might like it is...all."
The two of them were alone in the little courtyard, waiting for Hado and Mirio to buy their lunch and come downstairs. Yet Amajiki, knowing there wasn't anyone else watching, felt like he was center stage. Making a fool of himself as he went.
Was this what his crush was doing to him? Making him incapable of being around her? Was that what this meant? Getting too nervous to actually be around Kija? Amajiki forced that thought to the back of his mind, still not liking it.
After a moment, Kija picked one of the onigiri out of his lunch, then slouched against the table as she half-bit half-shoved it into her mouth.
The anxious worries of Kija eating his cooking hit Amajiki when she took a second bite. Not the greatest timing.
"Is it good?" His hands gripped the edges of his lunch box a bit too tightly when he asked.
Kija hadn't said anything. Was that bad? Normally it was good when people didn't talk while they were eating. Did that include right now, too? Had he made it any differently this time? He'd seasoned it the same and used the same ingredients. Nothing he could remember Kija absolutely hating—
"It's good, thanks," Kija mumbled. She looked up at Amajiki and gave him a smile.
The millions of butterflies in Amajiki's heart went dead silent.
It reached her eyes. The smile reached her eyes. He'd done something, he'd made her happy. Amajiki had made Kija happy.
Amajiki gave a small smile, "Thanks, I'm glad it cheered you up."
Kija winced and Amajiki's shoulders tensed from her expression.
"I...I thought you looked upset...is all." He looked down at his lap, too afraid to look Kija in the eye.
"Well...thank you," Kija said, "Yesterday was pretty..." She trailed off before shaking her head, "But don't worry, it'll work out."
Amajiki raised his head, "Are you sure? If you want any help—"
"It involves the explosive first year that won the sports festival."
Horrors of the demon child raced through Amajiki's memories, he gave Kija a wiry look, "I could...stand behind you and offer moral support?"
Kija chuckled at that, "You would help take my mind off things." She smiled at Amajiki, "I'd tell you to make sure I'm there if you two meet, but I doubt you'll enter the same room with him unless I'm there."
"You're right about that," Amajiki looked to the side as Kija laughed again.
He loved that sound, it made all the little butterflies in his heart beat their wings in sync. It sounded full, the smile genuine and her shoulders shaking from her laughter. Amajiki almost got lost in his thoughts thinking about how to make Kija laugh again.
