After a few minutes of assuring Amajiki that Kija would teleport him away if they ran into Yoarashi again, he'd stopped shaking enough to walk again. They'd changed out of their costumes and were on their way to the main building.

"The first years are taking their tests today too, right?" Amajiki asked.

Kija blinked, "Yeah. I'm surprised you remember."

"I remember what you tell me."

Oh, oh no. He did not make that causally endearing comment right there.

But he had, and Kija's heart warmed at the words, slightly jealous at how easily Amajiki could let little things slip out. Her face split into a smile without her knowing. Amajiki glanced at her, his expression turned soft, and he spoke, "Is there anyone you're worried about?"

The fuzzy feeling in Kija's heart dulled, reality bringing her back down. She winced, "Well...there's angry hedgehog."

Amajiki paused, "Do...do you call him that to his face?"

"Sometimes." She clasped her hands behind her back, trying to feign innocence.

He gaped, "How do you not die?"

"It's fun, trust me." Kija rose up on tiptoe, tipping her head forward, "You should come watch."

"I'd rather not."

"You can hide behind me again." Kija smiled and winked, "I'm sure everyone would love to meet another one of their senpai's."

The tips of Amajiki's ears flamed red and Kija laughed. She dropped back on the balls of her feet, bouncing slightly and wishing she had the courage to flick one of Amajiki's ears.

"I won't make you," she assured him, still cackling under her breath.

Amajiki let out a sigh of relief, shaking his head at Kija like she was a lunatic. His lips became the whisper of a smile, and he'd turned his body towards her while they walked, Kija doing the same to him.

"Meow."

They froze and stared at each other.

"That was not me," Kija said.

Amajiki looked over her shoulder and Kija followed his gaze, settling her eyes on the grass where a tiny fluffball sat.

A kitten stared back at them, meowing.

"What's a cat doing here?" Amajiki asked. He'd unconsciously stepped closer, his voice low and whispering in Kija's ear. A sharp ripple went down Kija's spine. She couldn't tell if she liked it or not, but she didn't have time to decide because the kitten meowed again.

Priorities.

Kija bit her lip and crept closer. Amajiki stayed in his spot, and the sudden absence of warmth on Kija's back caught her off guard. She kept herself under control and crept closer. "It could be a stray."

Amajiki took a few slow steps behind Kija, his shoes echoed on the pavement, "Could a kitten even get on UA grounds?"

The two looked at each other, then at the kitten, then back at each other.

Amajiki rubbed the back of his neck, "So..."

"Befriend, pet, then bring to the teachers?"

"Yes."

They turned back to the kitten and Kija crouched. She and Amajiki were still on the sidewalk that led back to UA's main building, with the kitten hidden in the bushes. It had brown-orangish fur dotted with fleck of black, molasses eyes too big for its small head, and its tiny paws beat at the ground. It couldn't be more than two months old.
