"I'll have the fries with a milkshake. Make it a large." The man I'm currently serving winks.
"Of course! I'll get that order out as soon as possible for you." I reply, jotting down the order, then hastily make my way to the kitchen.
It had been six months since Duke had left me without a word. Six long months of heartbreak and emotions.
When Duke first left, I was determined to prove that I could be independent and wouldn't need anybody. I was seriously wrong.
The first few weeks by myself were spent feeling sorry and sleeping through most days. Eventually, I had to pick myself up and get on with life. He wasn't coming back for me.
A large thump in my lower stomach forces me out of my thoughts and I place a protective hand over my stomach.
"Is the baby kicking again?" My friend Ariana asks.
"Yeah." I beam, stroking my hand over my stomach in the hope of soothing the baby.
A month after Duke left, I found out that I was pregnant. It turned out that we weren't as careful with using protection as I thought. Abortion was out of the question for me, seeing as the life had already been made, so I decided to keep it. I wanted something to be happy about and look forward to. Over the past months, I had constantly teetered with the idea of trying to contact Duke to let him know, but in the end decided against it, as he was so against a child previously.
"How long is left now?"
"About four months."
"I can't wait Abbie. I'm going to be the best auntie!" Ariana throws her hand up in the air and spins in a circle, making me chuckle.
I was quite far along in the pregnancy already, but it felt like it was slowly dragging along. In the first few weeks, morning sickness had decided to kick my ass and I was ungracefully throwing up every morning. It made working almost impossible and my friend Ariana had to cover most of my shifts. Eventually, the morning sickness passed, and I got back to a slight normal but picking up small items off the floor or working twelve-hour shifts felt very difficult.
The only thing I had refused to do throughout my pregnancy was find out the gender of the baby. In my mind, it felt wrong to find out something so exciting without Duke being present. This was his child too after all.
"You wouldn't be a good auntie." I cheekily admit, making Ari's face fall. "You would make an amazing godmother!"
"Oh my god!" She screams, tackling me into a large hug. "Are you serious?"
"I'm serious." I start to cry. To hell with these pregnancy hormones.
"You've just made my year; I'm going to have a godchild!"
As if the baby could hear, they deliver a harsh kick.
"Even the baby is happy with your decision." Ari laughs, placing a soft hand against my protruding stomach.
I wasn't large for someone that was five months into their pregnancy, but a definite bump was present that caught many people's attention.
"Shouldn't you girls be working?" My disapproving manager clucks her tongue.
"But Mary, I just found out that I am going to be a godmother!" Ari poorly excuses.
Mary's disapproving look turns into a warm smile. "Well, congratulations Ariana." Her gaze moves over to me, examining my bump with longing. "You can go home early today Abbie. You deserve it."
"No it's okay, I can work another thirty minutes," I reply, stunned by her kindness.
"Abbie, your ankles are the size of potatoes and you're not even fully cooked yet." Ari buts in.
